If you have a REALLY big pile of boxes of stuff to be shredded there are even services that will come to your house with a shredder in a truck. (I'm sure it's not cheap... but could be worth it if you've got a huge pile... and you're only going to do it once.) And, if you have files on a hard drive, or hard drives, there are good programs that do secure erase... like DBAN. And, if you have a bunch, and they're too old and small to be worth reusing, a good solid whack with a three-pound hammer, over the bearing shaft, will render them REALLY difficult to recover. Having been in business for myself for the past 22 years, I’ve frequently had client materials at the end of each job that were covered by confidentiality agreements. Many of these materials were engineering drawings of sizes too large for ANY of the “home” shredders, regardless of quality and robustness. I discovered that my corner UPS store offered secure bulk shredding based on a price per pound. Once I was satisfied with their security procedures, at the end of each job, I’d load up the remaining client materials, pay the UPS Store to shred them, and add the cost to the client’s bill. So, if you have either a lot to shred, or if you have a large backlog, consider commercial shredding. Otherwise, you’ll end up wearing out “home” shredders on almost an annual basis. Other things to consider: If you want a home shredder, get a crosscut model for better security. For ANY home shredder, extend the service life by oiling the cutting blades before every third or fourth use. Empty the refuse bag frequently - a full shredder is a PROFOUNDLY unhappy shredder. Don’t try to recycle the shredded paper - I don’t know why, but.many municipal recyclers won’t accept shredded paper. When emptying the shredder, vacuum the inside of the cutting blades to ensure that the shredder can continue to accept the rated number of sheets. Boom A three-pound sledge and a drill works for me on hard drives.

Was thru the tunnel (longest of 2) in Zion recently and that was a tick over a mile. The Whittier Tunnel is double and than some. Must be a really neat maybe 10 minutes or so. Time for a vacay to the 'great white north'.... Are there any 'openings' to outside for light and air? Zion tunnel has a couple which you can see from a mile away on the approach..... Been over 15 years since I went through there, but my recollection was always seeing some light at the very end of the tunnel But yes, very long. It’s a single lane railway/roadbed combination with a traffic light system at either end and cut straight through the mountain. It’s not like something that you go down into per se just straight ahead until you come out of the thing. When I travel through, it was on a tour bus.

In booms thread, some thought has been given to bad weather power. I think that is just the beginning and a more......integrated.....approach might be better. 'Being Prepared' is a real good idea. But it doesnt' stop at running the fridge and lights.......A long list of things, some not so obvious. I even go so far as to SHRED documents leaving the house. Anything with my name / address / account / credit or some other information. ALL bills are shredded. To that end I had some kind of no-name shredder my brother bought for me. I eventually BLEW IT UP.....(literally...smoke and flames....POOF!) and had to run outside to extinguish the fire. It was like a science fair project run amok. I replaced with a Fellows 12c. This is a P4 level CROSS shredder. P1 is long strips and nearly worthless unless used to start the fireplace. It gets better as you go 'up' to P7 but that is very tiny particles and VERY expensive. Government uses this. My fellows is quiet and quick. I did a couple credit cards today and an expired drivers license. I personally recommend an applied shredding program at your house. Your business / company should already DO so..... But pick a shredder from P3 to P5 levels. No reason for garbage pickers to have any access to YOUR information at all.... The cost? About 120$ on Amazon. I got a good deal going into Staples (in stock...take it home!) and asking for a price match. DONE! I paid less a couple years back...... This is my first time around buying a shredder and I got what they call a fellows 99 CI on Amazon I think? It was a little over 300 bucks maybe a lot to spend for something like that I don’t know, but needed to work fast. Out of curiosity, I went looking to see if there is an oil system you can add so you don’t have to go through the ritual, feeding the top of the oil manually. The first hit I got on the Internet was the device that was nearly a grand and a half but intended for large commercial shredders oh well I think I’ll stick to the little bottle lol

How SHOULD I oil my shredder? WD40 is not right. Or carb cleaner. Maybe aerosol Lithium?

Interesting topic... an issue as I see it is the constant influx of "paper" via legacy snail mail. During a disaster, the local Post Offices would be a thieves' wet dream. Besides shredding, go paperless as well... it helps keeping your statements and personal info from "floating" around...

I haven't used a shredder in a while... But back when I did I bought a pack of these cool "shredder oiler sheets". Picture a paper towel, presumably soaked in some sort of oil, and sealed in a plastic envelope. You drop the whole thing into the shredder like any other envelope. The shredder shreds it... and so oils itself with the oil on the paper inside. I don't think they cost very much and they seemed to work pretty well. Note.... Carb cleaner is a SOLVENT.... designed to dissolve accumulated petroleum based gunk... it is NOT a lubricant... in fact it would remove lubricant. (It's also quite flammable... so a small spark could turn your shredder into a barbecue... ) How SHOULD I oil my shredder? WD40 is not right. Or carb cleaner. Maybe aerosol Lithium?

I guess the only problem is you have to budget a new house into the mix.

Success, I think. I took 2x sheet of heavy (20lb) paper and oiled one than put it face-to-face with the 2nd sheet and ran 'em BOTH thru.
My LAST shredder was bogging down badly when I blew it up. I didn't care. I didn't even BOTHER to try to salvage the motor which Smelled
cooked......Other parts had melted from the heat.

Once again the secret(And it’s really not a secret lol) Is to keep oiling the crap out of these things. It’s really just canola oil and it disappears quicker than you might think with just a small amount of paper. It will never hurt to use twice what they tell you in this case like when the bin is half full, you can run a bit of oil the cutters And run the motor a lot so it doesn’t bog down like any motor that gets overheated from stress a load it’ll just blow up.

I suppose Mineral Oil would work. Or almost any cooking oil....(I'd skip Olive Oil)
But I'm a little OCD and will stick with my TriFlow. Might try a tiny dab of Aerosol Lithium,
which I use on squeaky garage door rollers and outdoor bits needing a bit of 'slick'

I'd skip the cooking oil... and especially the olive oil... Unless you want to add a whole new meaning to "that motor smelling cooked"... I suppose Mineral Oil would work. 405 suggested Canola Oil......oil of Rapeseed..... Using that would never have really occurred to me....especially given the other stuff I have 'in stock' or can easily acquire.

According to FELLOWES….(“ The shredder people”) Canola oil is actually the main ingredient in their dispenser bottle from the company. I would fail to understand why anyone would wanna mess around with anything less or different. The bottles are cheap relative to use and you can get them at Walmart.

Surprise! I'll continue with something with higher film strength and perhaps a dose of PTFE.....
Fellowes says NOT to use a petrolium based product. I need some help with THAT......I'm not suggesting you use 30wt but rather a very THIN oil........
'machine oil' or other.
the fellowes oil is about 10$ for a pint.....

Walmart carries the small bottles of the Fellowes oil. I don’t recall exactly what I paid…… Two or three bucks maybe. To protect the longevity, of the machine, and not have to lose sleep over what to put in there I thought it was a good deal, Especially now for the very small amount of shredding that I do. Thank goodness the big retirement job is finished that whole deal took me only one small bottle. (And YES!…. I did scare the garbage men!)

Our G-Men around here wouldn't blink unless an ARM or LEG were sticking out of the can.......
I don't shred much, either. 1/4 or 1/3 a 'basket' per week, max....Call it 10 sheets.
More stress on the system is the odd Credit Card and I have yet to need to shred a CD......
