I know alot of people use the iTunes Airport and I think a few of you use the squeezebox and maybe a few are using the Olive Opus.
I think I want an Opus, but I'm cringing a bit at the price and I'm wondering if there's something else comparable out there. Meaning something that is a CD player/burner and storage device that also connects to the internet, all in one piece.

I use a Mac-Mini with external FireWire storage. I use Rip and Play from sbooth.org for ripping and playing music. I'll also purchase from iTunes when convenience is preferred over CD though iTunes Plus isn't that bad to me. It also serves as the occasional "media player" and of course a computer, but I mostly use it for storage and music. Audio is output via optical to an M-Audio DAC that I hope to replace with Emotiva's DAC if it ever see the light of day, and DACmagic if not.

I run Squeeze Center on my Netgear NAS and have two Squeezebox 3's with external DACs for playback on my two main systems. I had an Olive Symphony for a while and it was a very good machine, but I filled the hard drive too quickly and decided to go the SB route.

I've moved all my CDs over to Squeeze Center over the past few years and run it on my main computer which is on 24/7. The music is on a RAID 5 drive array in that computer. I have SqueezeBox 3 in my main audio system, running digital into the receiver and a SqeezeBox boom for listening in other areas as background music. Everything is stored in FLAC lossless.
Before this I used 2 400 CD mega changers controlled by the computer for CD playback, but when I ran out of room in the second changer I decided that it was not the way to go. I love having my entire CD collection available at the touch of a button.
EDIT: I use MediaMonkey for management of my music collection (tagging, organizing). SqueezeCenter just scans the music directory for new and updated files occasionally.

I keep all of my music on my iMac. Most of it is Apple Lossless, but I do also purchase iTunes plus, I agree it's not that bad. My iTunes Library is streamed to my Apple TV which is connected to my TV via HDMI.

I use the Imac 24 and the Apple TV take 2 . My next challenge is a better Dac for the Apple TV take 2, and then build a server running Linux. Yes I am out of my mind on the Linux, but what fun though. ;D

I have all my CDs stored as FLAC files on a huge external USB2 drive, then I use tversity to convert to WAV and send it through my wireless network to my PS3, which is connected via optical to my LMC-1. Works pretty well and didn't cost me anything because I had all the component already.

I imagine it has to do with storage space, but storage is cheap and seems like some unnecessary steps.

Since the file is digital and it is outputted to the source digital, where in the process would it get converted back to analog? I'm pretty dumb when it comes to this stuff so forgive if this is obvious

jlafrenz, I am still experimenting with the whole music server thing. From my view, FLAC is one of the best ways to archive the music, it stores smaller than WAV (2/3 to 1/2 the size) without any loss of information. Since the PS3 currently will only accept WAV as it's lossless format, that is what I transcode it into. I hope in the future PS3 will support other lossless formats. My computer has enough horsepower to transcode the music realtime with no problems, and it is still lossless. I also use lameXP to create variable bit rate mp3s for use on my Sansa Fuze. Sometimes I hide from the kids and just listen straight off the computer.

What I have: MacPro (with a dedicated internal hard drive for music) running squeezecenter. All music ripped FLAC. Squeezebox routed through Cambridge Audio DACmagic then to my Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE preamp. I'm very happy with it and its very easy to access music.

I use this: MSI Wind Nettop barebones unit. You just add laptop memory and whatever HDD you wish.(very efficient, inexpensive, expandable and small) www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856167037Then I use Squeezecenter with two Squeezebox Duets and two Squeezebox Booms. I ripped most stuff in FLAC and some in MP3. Works GREAT!

I just hooked up an iMac 17" with an external 1TB drive as a HTPC. Sprung on the logitech wireless keyboard with trackpad as well. Really slick keyboard with its rechargeable battery and charging dock.

For the Mac guys, you might want to check out XBMC or Plex. Plex is a bit unstable, so proceed at your own risk, but they're both pretty slick HTPC interfaces.

Currently use a USB drive for all my music, played back by foobar and MediaMonkey. I am intrigued by Squeezebox/Squeezecenter and also an NMT. Still learning all about NMTs.
If anyone is using an NMT, please share your experiences...
