hey guys im in the market for some new speakers, amp and a whole system really, this is the first time that im about to invest a large chunck of money in music and i was wondering if the ert8.3 would suit my needs, my music taste is all over the place but id say 90% of what i listen to is heavy metal so with that in mind im looking for speakers that would give some loud guitars, if not what other speakers do you recomend? your help will be greatly appreciated

I heard the ERT 8.3s at Emofest 2009 and I have to say I was very impressed. Even compared to much more expensive speakers I used to sell in the hifi world these speakers are awesome. I would easily recommend for Rocking in out on. Tell us more about the rest of the system, amplification etc. Welcome by the way to the best, most friendliest board around. ;D

My advice would be to find someone that has them nearby and is willing to let you take a listen.....only you can define what your tastes are and listening to as many different types as possible is important....don't rely solely on what others say listen for yourself.

well the only thing i have is a 1980s technics system that was given to me , i just bought my first house so i might as well go crazy building a system from scratch . I must admit i'm fairly new to all of these and even though i have been doing some research online with all the choices out there im pretty confused as to what to get that could really suit my needs. i have a budget of about 5000 any and only looking for 2 channel speakers what do you guys suggest?

marvsteen There are some diehard metal fans here. There is one Emo with a handle of articdeth or articdeath and he listens to some hardcore metal. I don't remember if he had an Emo amp or Emo speakers. Maybe shoot him a PM. There is another Emo whose avatar was the M A from Metallica but I can't remember his handle. Anyway I've played quite a bit of Hard Rock/ Metal (Metallica, Lamb of God, AC/DC, GnR, Rob Zombie) through my KEF Q-90s and they sounded great till something messed up the tweeter in one channel. These speakers are over 15 years old though. Maybe check out their new line. KEF IQ90 www.kef.com/gb/loudspeakers/Q-Series/IQ90 I'd love to hear stories for when you audition them or any other speakers. I've yet to go to a place where they would let me play harder stuff than AC/DC. Good Luck. JD

The last I heard Mr. Artikdeth was using XPA-1s with some BIC speakers, possibly with upgraded crossovers....He might chime in if the Blackhawks arn't on.. +100,000,000 for Metal and rock in general p.s. if I ahd a 5,000 dollar budget I would be confused also.Too many options. ;D

well i wish i knew someone who had the ert8.3 that would be ideal, funnily enough they did let me try udo's thunderball cd at the bestbuy magnolia store without any objections and was able to hear the martin logans preface and source which i liked but not being able to hear them from all angles is a deal breaker for me, i also liked some vienna acoustics at electronic expo

If you have trouble using it, try a PM to Steve (bigred) to see if he can assist you. Also, Emotiva has a 30-Trial Period on their gear. Bring it in to your own home and listen to your heart's desire; and if you find it is not your cup of tea, return it within the 30-day trial period no questions asked. Very few people have ever returned an ERT-8.3 speaker. There simply isn't any other speaker in its price range that can do what the Emotiva ERT-8.3 Towers can do. As the old saying goes: "Try it... you will like it!" With a budget of $5000 for a 2-channel audio system, I would strongly consider the following setup. 2 - ERT-8.3 Speakers (the come as a matched pair) 2 - XPA-1 Power Amps 1 - USP-1 Analog Pre-amp 1 - ERC-1 CD Player Then, if you don't already own a sub woofer, you will have money left over from your budget to buy a decent sub. Emotiva will be shipping their long awaited subs near year-end. With that assortment of equipment, you will have a world-class sound system to enjoy your music on. All of the items listed above have received rave reviews by Professional Reviewers and have received "Best of ..." and "Editor's Choice" type accolades.

The only thing I may be change - one XPA-2 instead dual XPA-1, you can save some money for good subwoofer (preferably sealed design). For metal/hard rock subwoofer a must, no questions about. WOW marvsteen you walked into this at the right moment in time. So much in fact you must have a horse shoe up your $%&. A lot of people have spent thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars since the home theater craze started. I do installs etc and at this very moment in the time line if I was to build a personal rig this would be it...
LG 55LH41 TV UMC-1 Pro/Pre XPA-2 AMP XPA-5 Amp ERT-8.3 mains ERM-6.3 center ERD-1 surround two pairs or one with ERM-6.2 depending on the room As for a sub get a Rythlmik F-12 se or F-15 se again depending on the room perhaps even two LOL.
Build a HTPC using AMD and Gigabyte 790X motherboard and get the new ATI video cards as the HDMI out now finally after some years using Windows 7 and HD5800 allow true unmolested Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio! For HTPC nuts this is a Holy Grail and who's day has finally come! IMHO a PC is the only transport you need.
If going multizone and you want fancy touch panels use CQ, Cinemar or Xlobby... what ever turns your crank BUT if you want best multizone around man use XPA-5s with a Motu HD192. I could drive heck 24 stereo zones scaling that gear up!
This all depends on the money you want to spend in the end ehh!!!
All I can say is IMHO my gear/suggestions best 60k plus installs I've seen by a LONG SHOT! and my most expensive install to date was $35k
Solid-State
owhh and if this new home is being built brother be friggin sure you do the structured wiring properly... and don't listen to stupid electrician regarding this... consult an AV pro!!! Don't make the mistakes thousands of others do in structured wiring man! Run Belden 7876A to where a TV/phone/ethernet jack will go even if just one of those devices will be used at location. Run 1313A to any places you MIGHT potentially have speakers. Run/loop them to a wall plate for an IR/volume knob/keypad even if your not going to have one. Just have to loop through to a potential location for a keypad/knob. You don't even need a wall plate just have it there in case. Owhh and also run cat5e to location of knob/keypad back to your wiring closet/panel. I could rant/explain this for hours LOL just make sure if it's a new home with the walling going up to get the structured wiring right!

The 8.3's would be awesome with Rock as they can put out some pretty serious spl's, they're very neutral and clear sounding and can take a little edge off the top end of some rock recordings with their "sweet" treble. Regarding the XPA-1 vs XPA-2, it depends on your preference. If you like a slightly more "in your face", knock your door down like Mr T, amp? then the XPA-2 is for you. If you like a smoother more refined sound "aka like James Bond", refined, smooth, seductive yet powerful, then the XPA-1 is for you.

I always wonder how far up the retail food chain ID companies can go vs their retail counterparts. I recently posted about my listening to some Paradigm Monitor 11's vs my X-statiks. Except for low bass there wasn't really any comparison, X-statiks win. I'm interested in your thoughts for the 8.3....

If you really want to stay within that $5000 budget then here are my choices, very close to many of those above.
2ea ERT-8.3 $1598 1ea XPA-2 $ 799 1ea USP-1 $399 1ea ERC-1 $399 1ea PB13-Ultra $1599
Total $4794
The ERT-8's, USP-1 and ERC-1 are definite buys. You just will not find anything within 2-3 times these prices that will match the performance.
The XPA-2 is an excellent amp. The XPA-1 would be better but raises the total price by $999. (great if you can go with $5793)
The sub must be a top sub. I like to stick with the established direct to buyer companies that have a great reputation like SVS. The PB13-Ultra is superb. Slightly cheaper alternatives are the PC13-Ultra ($1399)or the PB12-Plus($1149). (read the latest Sound and Vision issue for six sub reviews including the PB12-Plus ... the clear winner at half the price of many of the others). Another plan would include 2ea XPA-1's with the SVS PB12-Plus sub would total $5343 (this would be my choice if you can find the extra $343).
2ea ERT-8.3 $1598 2ea XPA-1 $1798 1ea USP-1 $399 1ea ERC-1 $399 1ea PB12-Plus $1149
Total $5343
SolidState is leaning in the right direction. I would seriously consider going to a 5.1 system as funds are available. It would simply involve adding a ERM-6.3 and 2ea ERD-1's and a 3 channel amp like the XPA-3. Once you hear a properly setup Dolby Pro Logic IIx 5.1 system you'll not go back.
I will really be interested to see what you choose and your feedback. good luck! ;D

Chuckienut
Just a quickie to let you know that you made a typo on the $5343 system recommendation. You listed 2 XPA-2s when you should have listed 2 XPA-1s. Hopefully the OP knows that is what you meant to type.
If he knew how old you are he would be even more forgiving. If he knew you grew up choppiing down cherry trees with George Washington he would be tickled to see that you can even type. ;D
