I'm going to try analog and have a $500.00 budget. I would welcome any suggestions and information needed to make a good choice in selecting a new or used turntable.

Thanks Dyohn and Flamingeye for your recommendation. It appears that you have no qualms with a turntable 20-30 years old vs. one a few years old or even new for equal cost. Is reliability and serviceability of concern with vintage turntables? Twilkins loves his Rega P1 and there are Music Hall, Pro-ject and other turntables also that are sold new in the same ballpark price range. Its difficut to demo old vs. new turnatables side by side as most audio stores don't even carry turntables. All insights and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Unless it has been abused, a simple well made turntable should last a very long time. The only things you may need to do to an old one is replace the belt (if it's belt drive), and replace the stylus or cartridge, which is a normal wear item.
If you wanted, I could make a high-resolution recording from the Luxman, as well as on my Pro-Ject for comparison.

When I had my Pro-ject 1.2 with Pearl cartridge, surprisingly, it sounded better than a Music Hall MMF-5 with its stock cartridge in my Magnepan IIIa system using a Jolida JD-9 phono preamp with upgraded power cord and cryoed tubes. If I had to chose between Pro-ject and Music Hall, I would go with the Pro-Ject. For $500 used, you should be able to find some nice used turntables from Rega, Pro-Ject or Thorens.

If you haven't purchased anything yet I'll have a Sl1200 MKII for sale in the near future with a Grado Gold that is well within your budget.
