i just finished reading the sound + vision review of the new nad reciever and i am sure it will be an excellent product as nad products have been in the past. i still own a 20 year old nad reciever that runs the system in my daughter's bedroom. a fine product. what strikes me is the price.
$3999 for the nad vs the $1298 for the umc/upa-7 combo (on sale). same amount of power all channels driven. yes, i realize the nad has a few features the emo doesn't have, like audyssey, but........... i don't know, that does seem a little imbalanced in price, don't you think?

As has been discussed many times on this forum, NAD is like many of the "so-called" mid/high end product that is essentially over-priced. Always consider that is always going to be the case compared to the internet-only companies like Emotiva essentially because of the lines of distribution which add considerably to what you will pay to the retailer. A dealer markup is approx 30-40% then add your middleman(distributor) and of course the manufacturer. I can almost assure you like the vast majority of products out there, the NAD is manufactured in the Far East so your choice is academic.
With Emotiva you are getting a pre-pro AND the amp and the amp never goes out of favor(the advantage of separates). In the final analysis, it won't matter how much you pay for the NAD or any other piece of equipment in its price category or what the reviews say, when new technology emerges and you want to update, you have to replace the whole thing!
With Emotiva, it will only be the pre-pro you will replace and at a fraction of the cost!

Tchaik, I just read this thread for the first time. I had the exact same thoughts when I read the NAD review. In fact I have a similar reaction with every receiver review I read regardless of brand or model. Separates from Emotiva are a steal!

Remember the price in article is SRP, so you'll get a sizeable discount from most authorized retailers. Of course, it will still be quite a bit more expensive than the Emotiva stuff, but whether it is worth it to you is of course up to you only. I own NAD and Emotiva and truthfully think the NAD stuff is a step-up, which compared to Emotiva gear says a lot as my Emotiva stuff has been great. Maybe not a $3000 step-up though. I was waiting for a UMC, but gave up a long time ago. I ended up buying a new NAD T175 (SRP US$2000) from an authorized reseller here for approximately the same price the UMC would cost shipped to me. I'm quite happy I did as the T175 has been phenomenal. Since the NAD units are completely upgradable it'll be in my system for a long time to come. Unlike many other "upgradable" products we've supposedly seen on market, NAD has actually released 4 add-on cards, their Control4 module due in Q1 2010 and according to one article I've read at least one other is in development. I'm sure there are more. Regarding the pre-pros there are feature differences so which one is the best fit for your system is again something only you can decide. There are many other good options out there too.
FYI, I've seen NAD 5-channel amps from authorized online resellers in USA selling for about $100 than XPA5, so if you do your homework, there isn't a massive price difference. So you can pick the product you want based on personal-preference without your wallet making the decision. That is the best way of picking :-)
