For $1198 you can, paying $499 now and $699 in January, get performance that surpasses any AV receiver priced at about $5000 or less. I'm talking about buying the newly arrived Emotiva UPA-5 five channel, 58 lb brute of an amp (125 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 185 watts per channel into 4 ohms with all channels driven) for the holiday special of $499. emotiva.com/upa5.shtmCombine with this amp the Emotiva UMC-1 pre-pro available in January for $699. emotiva.com/umc1.shtmPlease note that the 125 watt or 140 watt receivers don't put out any where near that power with all five channels driven simultaneously. Yeah, you can nitpick on a feature or so that isn't a make or break deal for most people. Or you can say but it doesn't have Audysey. You don't need it. The UMC-1 will have everything you need to properly set up your speaker system. If you are considering a receiver in the near future and don't go with this combination of Emotiva separates, you are nuts. (Trust me I know about nuts). ;D ;D ;D

um, yes, that's what I am going to do very soon here. I have owned this H/K receiver and it's suited it's purpose (H/K is also conservative with their ratings though) for a while but it just doesn't have the headroom I am looking for. Probably going with a UPA-7 while it's cheap.

Smart guy! Your city hosted a most beautiful tribute to the tragically murdered four police officers from Lakewood, Washington. I hope it will do some good in creating a lasting positive attitude toward all of our police.
Now back to the great deal!

It was exactly this line of thinking that let me to Emotiva products, their web site, and this forum.
I thought to myself that I wanted to get a nice high end receiver. But when you start hitting $1k - $1.5k price points you begin to wonder what else is available. I wanted to take my audio to the "next level" so to speak. So, I began doing my homework and that is when I stumbled across Emotiva. I then began to research their products and found that I really liked what I was hearing, so I put myself on the pre-order list for the UMC-1 and joined this forum.
I am hoping to be a happy Emotiva owner soon! ;D

Yep, absolutely. I like to think of it as more like the "UN-Receiver". Very much more capability, without the Receiver compromise. What is better than that?? ;D My Pioneer Receiver's days are numbered. The UMC-1 and a UPA-5 are in my future too I think. Though I am thinking 2nd zone with a UPA-7. Hmmmm. The possibilities. ;D

Well, taking the plunge. Upa-5 is on it's way and a upa-2 soon to follow (upgradability if I ever get huge mains). The umc next month will be nice. I really appreciate this no no-nonsense approach to ht setups. I honestly never thought about a seperate amp 2 years ago, thus the Harman kardon receiver. Now I'm finding a reasonably priced alternative, this is cool. I'm glad I'm catching emotiva at this stage of their product evolution. There are so many possibilities.

It really is an excellent deal and with Emotivas great line-up of gear, you have several ways you could build your system. The UMC-1 pre/pro plus the amp(s) of your choice. It all depends on what you want to do. I was thinking a UPA-7 initially, but then I heard about the UPA-1. Two UPA-1's with a UPA-5. It's the budget audiophiles dream system.

I couldn't agree more. While us Canadians are paying at least 50% more (shipping and exchange) I don't think there is a better value out there. I have the UPA-7 (still in box) and just waiting for the UMC-1. Even at $2200 or so Can for the two I think it's a bargain for what you are getting.

What about the Onkyo TX-SR805 that can be found sometimes for only $400, with THX Ultra2 certification, Audyssey MultEQ XT Automatic Room Correction, PCM-1796A Burr-Brown Dacs for all channels, 150 watts times seven (8-ohm loads at 1% THD) factual measured power, excellent pre-amp and amp sections, plus a no fuss simple setup receiver with clear OSD, and all that jazz? Or the Onkyo TX-SR876 that sells right now for only $800, and adds the HQV Reon video processor with separate video adjustments for each individual video inputs, VLSC for all channels, Bridgeable capability, and a few more twists?
Oh, and not last, both with a glitch free operable proven record, after the latest firmware upgrades.
* Just giving more valuable and equally performing if not with more desirable features, options.

"..........150 watts times seven (8-ohm loads at 1% THD) factual measured power.........." That's funnier than most of my humorous posts.
1% THD is considered the beginning of clipping. A more legitimate distortion percentage is 0.1% which is the maximum rate of distortion that is acceptable to quote power specifications. The Onkyo power spec of 150 watts is not with all channels driven as Emo specs are. How strong is that Onkyo amp into 4 ohms, be sure and give us the factual measured power? The Emo amps meet all THX certification levels, they just don't bother to get the label, it saves us money.
The 805 was replaced by the 806 which was replaced by the 807. Emotiva does not sell refurbished products and all have a five year warranty.
If you don't think the Emo amps are a bargain then why did you say in a previous post:
"..........I was thinking that perhaps the Emotiva XPA-3 would do just fine in my situation, while using the internal amps of my Onkyo 876 to power my four surrounds. Or would I be better served by an XPA-2 in combination with an XPA-5?.........."
BTW Bob, where did you hear that the XPA-5 got hot? I own the XPA-5 and it never gets more than warm. If you want to know what hot is, crank up your Onkyo receiver driving some 4 ohm speakers like my XPA-5 drives and put your hand on it. Now that is hot! ;D

Lordofrings and Drew, if you've listened to separates, you would not even consider purchasing a receiver for your main listening or HT room - at any price!

i know deep down this is the way 2 go. so i'm figuring amp first then umc-1 down the road that way i can get the best without the kinks by the time the umc comes knocking at my door
