Thanks Chuckie!
I tend to agree with you and plan on waiting , but it is something of a leap of faith because I cannot audition the Emo stuff - and the current Pioneer Elites are getting rave reviews. Plus they are available right now. But no, there I go again - I'll wait.
Honestly, what's got me excited about the UMC-1 is actually, in large part, the video demo of the setup menu system. It's just such an elegant OSD - how could I not want it? That, and the small number of reviews/articles I have found on the web about Emo's background and prior products are reassuring.
I took an audio gamble in 1984 when I bought an unknown product called The Carver Receiver. 26 years later, it's still in my living room powering my 2-channel audio system. All the signs say that Emotiva is the real deal, so I'm going to give it a shot.
I have Mythos ST's in front and a Mythos 10 center. No new rears yet - I'm using my Def Tech SM450's right now. No subwoofer.

^ I agree with you, the Onkyo TX-SR876 sucks (the sound) compares to the Pioneer Elite Ice Receiver (the Elite SC-25). ...Just like you said, "cardboard sound". * And I couldn't have said it better myself than the poster just above yours. ...Chuckie his name I believe. Last but not least, Welcome to the Lounge.

Awesome sales pitch there chuckster... Palmfish welcome to the board!!! Chuckie is correct in every statement he makes... Seperates are always superior to AVR's and Emotiva and there pricing is beyond compare.. You would not be disappointed in waiting for the UMC-1 and pairing it with any of the Emo amps, especially the XPA amps!

Brand new member here! Like many, I happened upon Emotiva while researching new AVR's for my HT. This thread is very pertinent to me as I too came to the conclusion that these Emo separates are an attractive alternative to a "mid-level AVR." I'm currently marking time with my 9-year old Denon AVR-1800 and Pioneer DVD/SACD/DVD-A player through Def Tech Mythos speakers. As it happens, I was (still am, I suppose) looking very seriously at the Onkyo TX-SR876 and Pioneer Elite SC-25 (I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Pioneer). I finally had a chance to audition the Pioneer Elite the other day vs. the Onkyo TX-NR3007 (the 876 is online only at this point). I've got to say, I haven't listened to separates in a long time, but that Pioneer sounded fantastic. And next to the Pioneer, the Onkyo sounded like cardboard. The big appeal of the 876 for me would be the top-of-the-line Reon upscaling, ISF calibration for each nput, and Audyssey MultiEQ XT - you just can't touch those features for less than $2K in an AVR today. After listening though, the Onkyo definitely didn't sound as musical as the Pioneer - tempting as those features are to me. I really like that Pioneer, but I love the idea of owning separates, and the Emo's look very promising. So for me, it's either buy the Pioneer online for about $800 ($1000 on EBay minus $200 Paypal Bing cashback balance), or wait until April for my name to come up on the UMC-1 pre-order list. I'm in no hurry, so I'm going to wait and decide. Anyone here have an opinion on the Pioneer ICEPower Class D sound? I can't listen to the Emo amps, so how do their amps sound? I would without hesitation say that 876 is alot more AVR than you or anyone else in this thread is giving it credit for. And its a better built and sounding piece than the SC-25. Especially the amp section which is better than most of even the higher end mass produced AVR's out there. A true class A/B amp with triple darlington output, vs a class D chip amp in the Pioneer unit. Its sound is actually very smooth, but you need to take advantage of its full compliment of EQ functions that is has. Also be aware that it uses top of the line Burr Brown DACs, that Pioneer uses a much cheaper Wolfson DAC array. Most people don't realize that when they demo these AVR's they arent actually using the internal DACs of the AVR, many/most times they are hearing the sources own DAC's so if your demoing an Onkyo vs. another AVR and both are using seperate sources, your most likely listening and comaring the sound of the sources own DACs and not that of the AVR so your not getting a good accurate feeling for how the AVR sounds itself. The 876 is an excellent AVR for the money, especially at around $800 bucks at a few online stores currenty.

Also be aware that it uses top of the line Burr Brown DACs, that Pioneer uses a much cheaper Wolfson DAC array. Ordinarily, I just read these sort of discussions, AVR vs. separates, etc., etc. It humors me. I've had it every which way, and everything has a plus side. That said, I had to comment on the above statement. Wolfson makes some of the highest quality DACs in the world. They are more musical and melodic than any DAC I've ever heard. It is one of the reasons people love the sound of the Pioneers when sources are digitally attached.

I was really close to getting the SC-27, I spent a long time a friends house listening to it - but I've always been a separates guy, and I was a little concerned about the class D amps. It did sound good though.....

Me think the Pioneer Elite SC-27 with Ice amps, MCACC Air Studios certified, THX Ultra2 Plus, and Wolfson Dacs is an excellent receiver. Same for the Onkyo TX-SR876 & TX-NR906 with Audyssey MultEQ XT, THX Ultra2 Plus, Burr-Brown Dacs.
Both are great, or both sucks depending on your viewpoint.
Personally I prefer Krell separates.
