I haven't tried using it yet, but the latest beta firmware from Oppo adds DLNA support for streaming to the unit.

Thanks for the heads up.....I haven't been watching for updates as often as I used to.
I hope Emo offers continuing firmware updates to expand the feature-set on the UMC once it finally ships.....Oppo is GREAT in that regard.

lol well they should be good at it since its their only product Huh? R If you check out the Oppo site, they only carry as a player the standard and special edition 83 player. Both using the same platform. So in essence one player for firmware support. No more standard DVD universal players in their product line up. They do carry their HDMI switcher as their other product they sell but as players go, one platform for support.

LOL That wasn't my point. I just continue to be amazed at the way some people here seem to think that Emotiva is the only company on the planet that can do anything really well. I'm as loyal to Emo as the next guy (as witnessed by the endlessly growing stack of empty Emo boxes in my garage), but come on folks.....I was just commenting that Oppo does a great job of updating the firmware on the BDP-83 with not only fixes, but also new features. I'll repeat my hope that Emotiva will follow their lead. Of course, to placate some here, I'm sure Emo will do it MUCH better than anyone else..regardless of what they decide to do. Geez R

Can anyone confirm that they are using the DLNA feature for the Oppo?
In any event, this is fantastic news. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on the Oppo, but didn't like the idea of not having DLNA with the unit.

I don't know much about DLNA, but my BDP-83 did download its last firmware upgrade from the Ethernet cable attached to my home network. But I think that was the Sept. 30 release. The latest release (Public Beta) has a release date of Dec. 22. I'd like to use it, but I NEVER use Beta stuff. Sony taught me all I need to know about Beta crap...[smile]

I'm using the Oppo "Network" function to play music off an external hard drive connected over ethernet now. Still playing around with it, but it works. Mike

Ooooh, that *is* pretty nice. Maybe I'll download that Beta firmware after all. Thanks for the heads-up!

What is DLNA? DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a standard used by manufacturers of consumer electronics to allow entertainment devices within the home to share their content with each other across a home network.- Wiki

I haven't tried it yet. All of my audio is saved as FLAC (some ALAC too) and Oppo doesn't support it. Hopefully they will add it. I can have my server transcode to MP3 on the fly, but the sort of defeats the purpose of ripping to FLAC.

Me too - streaming from my upstairs Mac via PS3 Media Server.
Don't worry about the beta, you can always revert to the previous release in a few minutes. Oppo's beta is Sony's GM.

It is the new official FW update. Read instructions on Oppo website (need to reset defaults instead of just a suggestion). Mike
