The pre-outs on my receiver are only for the surrounds and subwoofer, so I wouldnt be able to add an amp. But if the sub came with line level inputs I should be able run the speakers as large and use the subs crossover to take care of the bass management right? What is the model of your receiver? I'm sure you could pick a used receiver pretty cheap and it would work for you since you are going to be using the preouts.

its the Sony STR-d2090 the Marantz SR6001 from accessories4less looks nice at 400 dollars. That Marantz would work out just fine. You could then add the amp to the 2 main speakers and use the AVR to power the rest and build your system up piece by piece. You shouldn't have a problem having a nice little setup and staying in your budget.
