Went by the local best buy today to look at getting a Mac Mini and while I typically avoid any home theater equipment from best buy their magnolia home theater store had a pair of Martin Logan Purity's Demo's for $600 each ($1650 each retail). I was very tempted to get them though I am on a limited budget. Another problem would be that I am in a smaller apartment and placement could be tricky. I would say I do movies/music 60/40.
For such a great price is this worth the jump into the electrostatic speaker arena?

That frankly is a steal! If your prepared to go down the ESL road, this would be a great start

Its so tempting but I honestly had no intentions of going down the ESL road, not now at least. They sounded incredible in the showroom. I listened to some of John Mayer's battle studies as well as some Pink Floyd. I didn't move the speakers but even in the large showroom they had a small sweet spot. My main concern for now is being in a smaller apartment and not having an optimal place for speaker placement.
Does anyone have any experience with these speakers especially in a smaller area? Also with home theater applications?

Does anyone have any experience with these speakers especially in a smaller area? Also with home theater applications? It all depends on your listening habits. If you are the type to get up and do other things while listening to music then these ML's with the smaller panels won't cut it due to stepping out of the incredibly small sweet spot. If all your listening is done in the sweet spot, and you like these speakers then you have an excellent deal available to you.

Electrostat's sound just like dynamic speakers when you're not in the sweet spot. The small sweet spot is just an illusion as a result of electrostats sounding so much better than dynamic speakers. Those Purities are great speakers for the price. You'll spend 3 times as much money on box speakers before they even start to sound close to the Purities.

Peter mused: >> Electrostat's sound just like dynamic speakers when you're not in the sweet spot. The small sweet spot is just an illusion as a result of electrostats sounding so much better than dynamic speakers. <<
Ummm, Peter, those speakers have only 30 deg. of horizontal dispersion, meaning they most definitely have a very small sweet spot. This is not necessarily a deal-breaker for some folks, but it sure would be for me.
I sold the top-end KEFs back in the day. And, while I loved the sound of those speakers, the sweet spot was vanishingly small. Sitting back 10 ft. from the speakers, the sweet spot was about 2 ft. wide, if that. In fact, the speakers even had LEDs built-in to the tweeter/midrange head unit. These LEDs were used to aim the head units for the best possible sound. You rotated the head units (they pivoted - horizontally and vertically - separately from the main, bass, cabinets) so that both LEDs could be seen equally bright from your seated position. The KEFs also were spec'd. at about 30 degrees of horizontal dispersion.
This is NOT a slam against the MLs or the KEFs. Both are VERY good-sounding speakers that image quite well and have very pin-point placement of instruments and such in the soundstage. However, prospective owners should know up-front that these speakers require you to maintain a very precise seating placement or the soundstage collapses and the imaging goes to hell.
My Gallos are the exact opposite of that, they have an incredibly large sweet spot. In fact, I can sit directly in front of the left speaker and still hear a very credible soundstage with very good "imaging". That is one of the biggest advantages of having speakers with extremely wide dispersion (300 deg. of horizontal dispersion!!). They are not very fussy at all about placement, everyone in the room is in the sweet spot.

I saw these at my Best Buy last Friday night. They had one pair left so I spent some time listening to them. Sounded pretty good, much better than the ML Source I thought. However, I would still take Emo 6.2's and a good sub over these. The Purity's did some things better than the 6.2's but they were a bit muddy in the bass and I didn't feel the bass woofers blended well enough with the panels for me to buy them.

The larger the ES panel is the less you have to worry about sweet spot. The purities are pretty much on the lower level of the ML line up, but they still sound quite nice. I would agree with Steve that with that model you will have a defined sweet spot. Not that it sounds horrible out of it, but there is a difference. I have pretty large speakers (6ft on their 2" platforms) and I can walk out, down the hall...and they still sing to you. Plus, a true hybrid will not hurt dynamics that much at all. In fact, my Odysseys are probably more dynamic with their front firing 8 and rear firing 12 and large stat panel than a lot of traditional woofer speakers. It's really all about your listening tastes though. Please don't let any of us make a decision for you. That is not the way to go about building a good system for yourself. Only you can do that.

Got em, not for me but for my dad. He's building a house with a dedicated home theater room and he listens to a lot of two channel music so a good buy for him. I'm trying to talk him into the USP-1 and the ERC-1 now. Until he comes and picks them up from me I'm enjoying them jammed in my small apartment living room. Quite a sweet sound in place of my cheapo def techs. It will be depressing switching back. Thanks for the replies.

ONLY 2 steps down from a vantage and with that price I would pic them up. I was going to go ML but at the time only bought the descent (org) it has been the best sub i have ever owned.
