I recently got 4 ERD-1s. The post screws in the speaker where out almost 3/4 inch out of the box. Obviously with the foam on the mounting plate from the factory, this left a TON of play when mounted onto the plate. I tightened them to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch out. They fit nice and snug now. My concerns: Some of those screws were getting pretty darn tight, going in that far. After reading this emotiva.com/erd1_install.shtm I am a bit concerned that I may have them to tight. I only see two possible solutions. Remove the screws and cut them a bit shorter or apply more foam type material to the mounting plate. As Emo already had four nice little foam strips... it seems shortening the screws would be a better idea. From reading past posts, it sounds like earlier on when folks got ERD-1s the posts were all the way in or very tight, requiring loosening to mount. Then causing folks to question screw length left after loosening. I wonder if Emo went to longer screws because mine are easily an inch long, and all four speakers were WAY out meaning a good half inch or more of play between the speaker and plate if you just mounted them that way. I woud hate to bust one of those internal retainers or see a screw come popping through the cabinet... I am thinking I will take them all back down and cut down the screws by a 1/4 inch or so. Any thoughts?

I got mine a couple weeks and tightened them down snug...I first didn't do anything and hung them up, but they felt loose on the mount, so I decided to just snug them down...then they slid over nice without them feeling loose.
I would think if you screwed them down snug, you will be fine...I guess we really need to decipher between snug and tight. For me snug---tightened down until I had modest resistence and then stopped

Well I am not talking about how snug the ERD fits into the back plate. I am talking about the resistance felt on the post screws as I drove them in to get the appropriate mount? It sure seemed like as I screwed those posts in, that I had to use quite a bit of force, some spoke of being able to turn those posts in with their fingers... no way for me... I had to really crank on them as they got further and further in. Thus my concern..... should I back them out and shorten them? I fear maybe they were getting so resistant because maybe the end of the screw was making contact with something in the cabinet or end of the socket etc.

Interesting - I had to loosen mine ... would imagine if you use finger-tips and are gentle and just do them so they are tight you should be fine. Unless we get word from emo I would not suggest forcing them in 3mm or anything like that though. I would think that up to the depth of the cut-outs should be OK and perhaps take out the screw completely to see how far it would be going into the wood at that point?

I am going to drop one and remove the screws and see how far they would appear to penetrate at the depth I have them. If they look scary long... I will take the dremel cut-off tool to them.

Check the specs for the cabinet thickness too - that way you might know how much wood is there before you "poke through".

I do - and have one still in the box - getting TIME to do it is another matter - I want to pull the back off a 6.3 as well! Remind me at the weekend if you've not heard back before then!

As I was passing a box in the hall I noticed it was the ERD one ....
The screws are 20mm long not including the head (i.e. LESS than an inch) and the first 8mm below the head is unthreaded.
Cheers!
