Just want to know if anyone succeesd in connecting a HTPC via HDMI to the UMC-1 and output to projector and LCD TV. I am planning to connect this way and using a ATI display card feeding to the Xonar HDAV 1.3 sound card first and then output(bitstreaming) to UMC-1 when I have it eventually. HDMi handshake problem can be ugly as I saw complaints in cases like the following:-
source (e.g BR player/HTPC) directly connected to display (tv/Projector) via HDMI is okay but have issues with a AVR/pre-pro connected in between.

Although I would be buying an XMC-1 instead of the UMC I'm also interested in compatibility with a HTPC and the Xonar HDAV 1.3 (which is what I'm using). I hope they did some HTPC testing with the Xonar HDAV 1.3....
On the other hand, I've had no problem with my Yamaha 663 and the Xonar HDAV 1.3 outputting to a 42" Plasma.

I have a GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H (9400uATX) MB with the Asus HDAV1.3 Slim card connected through the UMC-1 to a Toshiba 52HM84 DLP TV (720p) and there a no handshake problems at all. In fact it seems to work better with the UMC in the loop. Without the UMC-1 if you accidently hit the channel button on the TV remote the movie would stop playing and I’d have to go back in and restart the movie. Now the HTPC seems to stay untouched and continues playing. Also I can flip around on the inputs of the UMC-1 and come back to the HTPC (HDMI) input without any problems. The movie keeps playing and the monitor doesn’t try to change resolution on it’s own or anything.
With TV (SiliconDust HDHomeRun through Win 7 Media Center 64bit) it plays beautifully except for a certain glitch now and then that has been mentioned by others and should be taken care of with the UMC-1 firmware update. That is when fast forwarding and skipping around, when you start to play the show again the UMC-1 will sometimes not lock onto the DD 5.1 signal correctly. That is to say that sometimes the sound will not come from the center speaker or may come only from the right or only from the rears. As a cure (and not to annoy my wife too much) I found I could just press the (Audio) mode button on the remote to a different audio mode and then press it to go back to DD. That’s seems to sync the audio right back up. At first I switched the UMC-1 to a different input and then back which was annoying.
I have also listened my FLAC music files with Foobar2000 and it sounds very good and no problems. Netflix’s online streaming through Media Center is working perfectly also. UMC-1 displays “PCM 2 ch” or I can switch the mode and it displays “stereo”.
I’m very happy with the addition on the UMC-1 and hope that the firmware fix’s the various glitches that have been mentioned in other threads. The UMC-1 is a very smooth but detailed sounding unit. Nothing veiled or muddy nor bright or shrill! It’s a very sweet unit!

Which ATi card? If you use a 5000 series card you can bitstream HD audio direct without using the Xonar - might be better/cheaper and if you have the Xonar already, you could maybe sell it to pay for e.g. a 5750?

hogweed75, Since you have a 720p DLP, I was wondering what resolution you are sending from your htpc. I have 720p LCD and tried sending a native 1376x768 from a macbook through the UMC-1 to the TV, which didn't work ok. Even on passthrough it was put down to 480p, 720p depending on what I had set before... Now, the output on the macbook seems to be busted (picture has a green tint, not totally uncommon). Anyways, I'm waiting for a mini displayport cable from monoprice to test my macbook pro with it. Until then I figured and ask what you did... I would send a 720p signal, but that cuts off the top and bottom of the picture, so not an ideal solution.
Thanks, Roshi

IME Macbooks seem to have "funny outputs" or maybe a better way of putting it is that theirs seems to be different to standard PC stuff and maybe some of the TVs don't like it?

If I set it any larger the desktop hangs over the edges of the TV screen where I can't see it. In tmt3 it's set for 720p which is set to take over video settings. The UMC-1 is set at 720p 60Hz. I'm hoping to purchase a new TV by the end of the year to get 1080p. This Mitsubishi WD-82737 82" DLP caught my eye recently but by the time I'm ready to buy I'm sure there will be a lot more choices. www.mitsubishi-tv.com/product/WD82837 about $2800 right now. I prefer a TV over projection for the reasons of not having the expenses or needing the room for a screen, projector, mounts, wiring, etc. and the room doesn't have to be so dark. But of course projection has some advantages too. I sat and watched this 82" TV for about 20 minutes and my kids had to drag me out. I know I can get a better picture in a smaller TV but I love this size and the picture was really excellent. Right now my Toshiba is a 52".

Well, if hummer drill doesn't scare you it's not so difficult ;D Actually you can find on-line pj wall/ceiling mount for about $50 and setup projector is a way easy than wall mount tv... For example my setup: emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=diy&action=display&thread=8229 There is quiet informative web site about pj and I think makes sense to check it: www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater-multimedia-projectors.htmIMO modern pj make same or better pq (for fast moving picture) than even plasma and better picture quality than LCD, but on 100"-120" screen with contrast up to 200000:1 and 1835 lumens of brightness!!! All you need - heavy windows curtains For beginning you can watch movies just on wight wall in relatively dark room. Later (if you'll want it) you can add DIY screen form WilsonArt DW60 laminate (about $100) with amassing 1.3 light gain, so you'll get high pq inside room with moderate light. BTW High contrast PJ's price has dropped down to about $2k last year... Rklpoon, I'm sorry for my off topic post, I just couldn't resist

Is there an overscan control on the TV? Or possibly a setting labelled "1:1"? When sending from a PC, ideally you want to disable overscan so you can have the pixels 1:1 at the native resolution of the TV. What feed are you sending the signal over (sorry if I missed it).

Everything is via HDMI. Nvidia 9400 video chip in the Gigabyte MB has HDMI out to the Asus HDAV1.3 HD audio card, out to the UMC-1, finally to the HDMI input of the TV.

So if you set the NV card to the native res of the TV, is there a menu somewhere in the TV allowing you to adjust the scanning (i.e. overscan) so you can turn it off, set it to 100% or 1:1?
Maybe it's the 9400? I recall some version of nVidia driver that allowed overscan etc. adjustment within the driver too ... it might not be applicable to HDMI though.
Another thought - have you tried direct from the video card to the TV in case the HDAV card is fiddling with the video signal?
As mentioned, replacing the pair with an ATi 5xxx card might be better overall and you could sell the HDAV to pay for it?

It's the same thing even if the Asus HDAV is bypassed. It's only the desktop that is set to 1176x664. Once tmt3 start it's takes over the resolution and changes to full 720p. It was a known problem with the 9400 on the Gigabyte MB but only affects the desktop. I get full Dolby True HD and DTS MA perfectly with the Asus.
I have looked into the ATI 5xxx card which will eventually be a better answer for HTPC's but there are still a few bugs to work out on the drivers as well as an update to tmt needed before I switch over. Very soon I'll most likely be retiring the Asus HDAV and installing a HIS H575Q1GD Radeon HD 5750 1GB. I'm waiting until they get tmt working (True HD & DTS MA) with the 5xxx series cards. So far they only work with Power DVD 9 and WinDVD. I prefer tmt so I'll wait. They should have it going fairly soon and I'll just need the update.

Not sure if it's relevant here, but the ATI5xxx card with PDVD9 or other software don't support playback of BD ISo or BD BDMV.Only Asus HDAV + TMT can.

I just purchased PDVD9 and have used clown_BD to backup a blu ray disk to .ISO. If I mount the iso in virtualCloneDrive PDVD9 launches and it autoplays the blu ray ISO just fine with full HD AUDIO bitstreamed from the ATI 5xxx card. Be careful what info you spread. Right now TMT does not work properly playing certain formats and everyone is waiting on a patch.

I started budilding a HTPC a couple of years ago with the LG Blu-ray rom. The rom came with a copy of PDVD. It used to support playback of BD BDMV ripped from AnyHD DVD(my main usage). On subsequent upgrade of PDVD, it dropped the BD ISO/BD BDMV support which caused a lot of discontent from users or new buyers without knowing this. I then moved on to add the Asus HDAV sound card for HD audio. It came with TMT which support BD BDMV/BD ISO. So I stopped using PDVD therefrom. And now the new ATI 5xxx card comes to play. I only said it does not support the playback of BD BDMV/BD ISO by itself. Your using virtualCloneDrive is definitely a workaround for BD ISO (but not for BD BDMV; AnyHDDVD only enabled ripping to BD ISO on its upgrade version). Sorry if I have mis-spread things around. I did not focus for the difference between PDVD and TMT. Nowadys I just try to enjoy the benefit and easiness of what TMT can offer to me(playback ripped BDMV & HD audio). BTW, would apprecaite if you could enlighten me of the shortcomings of TMT,i.e. -what formats not playing properly? I am using version 3.0.13.139 with WinXP SP3.

Forget to menton my TMT is bundled with the Asus HDAV sound card(and upgraded from ASUS web site after a lot of bugs fixed eventually. Hope UMC-1 eventually does). May be that version is different(not sure about this) from the commerical version.
I mentioned this because I just saw complaints with the TMT commercial version in AVS forum.

I think it was a problem with one of the new HD audio formats. I can't find the exact post. Here is the thread. www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1179134&page=139its on one of the last 5 pages. many are waiting for a TMT patch to resolve the issue. With ANYDVDHD running you can rip an ISO of a blu ray movie. With Virtual Clonedrive(free from slysoft) you can mount the .ISO file. The newest version of Powerdvd ultra(the only one i tested) launches the movie and plays it just fine. Perhaps you are using a Free OEM copy of Powerdvd with limited features? TMT may support playback of an ISO file direcly?? Powerdvd needs the .iso file mounted. The key overall is to remove the encryption from the .ISO that you create using AnyDVDHD. AnyDVDHD is essential for anyone running an HTPC in my opinion.
