Hey guys,
I know the XMC-1 is not out yet but does anyone know if the sound quality will be the same as the UMC-1 if were are speaking only about the digital inputs?
I have no plans to use anything except HDMI and am not sure if I should wait for the XMC-1 or take the UMC-1 plunge.

Nobody who will say anything can answer. But they may use the same Cirrus DSP, suggesting the sound would be very similar.

My feeling is that UMC-1 may have everything I need as far as connectivity.
I was just wondering if the XMC-1 is overkill if you were not going to use any analog connections?

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm in the process of building a separate 2 channel system in a different room. So my HT will be for TV and movies only. I wonder if the XMC is going to sound any better for BD movies/concerts and TV. I was previously set on waiting for the XMC because of the better analog section for my music. But now that I will only use it for movies and TV I'm not so sure if it's really worth the extra dough over the UMC. Can anybody tell any difference from the specs, that might suggest that it would be better for movies?

Regardless of the DSP used, my understanding is that the DAC in the XMC-1 would be the Analog Devices 1955 (2-channel), compared to a Cirrus CODEC (8-channel). The DAC and its analog filtering and output stage, along with the upgraded analog section of the XMC, should make an improvement in SQ.
The DSP should not affect the SQ in any way unless something is really wrong in the programming of the decoder. This is particularly true if you intend to output the incoming audio without adding any DSP post-processing (other than levels and EQ), something most people considering the XMC would not do anyways...

At this point, I think that Lonnie is the only person who is in a position to answer that question with a high degree of certainty. There are just too many possible variables in the circuit design that none of us have access to. Where so many people are wanting feedback on this particular Q it would be nice if Lonnie would chime in and offer his insight on the relative SQ for both analog and digital audio output. ;D

Yeah it would be nice to know. I have the ERC and USP (and XPA-5) for CD playback so I would be interested to hear from the top of the tree if there would be any or little difference between the UMC and XMC for AQ when Bitsteaming the Bluray side of things?
Someone throw us a bone please.

Guys, I sent an email to both Lonnie and Dan Laufman on saturday asking them this same question but for both 2 channel music and ht. Unfortunately no response from them as of today

Fernando,
Did you or anyone else ever hear back on this topic?

I may raise some people's blood pressure. If you haven't spent more on acoustic treatment of your Listening room than you should have, go with the UmC. If it is for home theater, go with the umc . If you are obsessed or want to be, go with the uMC.
The umc. Will satisfy most peoples needs. It is very nice
