I was asking myself the same question. I decided that the XPA-5 will meet all of my requirements and be significantly less expensive. Never had the chance to hear one of the MPS amps. I'd love to be able to do a comparison just to see if there are significant differences. I know those that own the MPS swear by them.

I vote for the XPA-5 but in all honesty I have not heard the MPS-1. I simply know the XPA-5 is a hell of an amp

It depends on if your more into music or movies in saying that though I never heard the XPA-5,but I do have a IPS-1 which is the little sister to the MPS and is the most musical amp I have ever heard and it`s not bad for movies ether I have had phase linear, carver ,harmond/kardon mono blocks , yamaha and pioneer amps most where A/B amps and one the carver was a magnetic amp which was my favorite amp before the IPS-1 which is a class H amp and is my new favorite I think it brings out more detail it`s definitely more refined the music is crisp and clear with well defined mid bass and good bass punch it has a really low noise floor it`s whisper quite I can hear the musicians breathing and even sometimes hear them brush up against there mick`s I have never heard that before with my other amps and it took me several listens before I realized that that was what I was hearing , with movies you really hear all the detailed sounds in the background no matter how subtle it`s clear even if there is a lot going on in the movie at the time nothing gets lost every thing is well balanced and flows effortlessly I just can`t find a single fault with this amp it`s just that good , but I think it shines best with music any music ,but I do not think you can go wrong with any of the Emotiva amps IMHO

Titelies, great to hear you're pleased with your new XPA-5. I just looked at the photos of your new dedicated home theater project. Wow! What a fabulous job! You can be very proud of that room. ;D Thanks Chuckienut. Took a lot of research on design fortunately I had a friend who knew most of the construction research. It has been a great addition to our family, we spend a lot more time together. Slowly working on hardware upgrades... Need to upgrade my receiver to one of the new 9.2 Onkyo's and then the Emo 8.3s. Thought I was buying the 8.3s today cuz of the supposed Holiday sale but it turned out to be a mistake. The XPA-5 made a huge difference already even in the speakers that I'm currently using. Thanks again for the compliments, much appreciated.

had a new XPA-5 and went for a MPS-1 as soon as i found a used one in my price range. Like flamingeye mentioned, the MPS is just more refined and detailed..period! Not to mention I like the way the front looks. Its ashame Emotiva no longer does that "floating" style Another reason I went with MPS over the XPA was that it was just more convenient and less clutter to have one amp for all my needs-VS- 2 or 3 having a 7.1 system and zone 2 speakers to power. It seems though my MPS has developed a slight "hiss" coming from the amp itself, not through the speakers. I plan on removing the modules individually and giving them a good cleaning/inspection and hoping that solves my problems
