This question is aimed at anyone who has both a Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player AND a Emotiva ERC-1 cd player. I have the Oppo Blu-ray player which I use for playing my CD's. I'm just wondering if there is any appreciable audio quality differences between the 2 machines. I would really like to hear from someone who actually has both machines in the same system. Thanks, Greg

I have both machines and a USP-1.The Oppo using 2 CH analog is a good CD player. The ERC-1 is a much better player for CD using 2 CH. analog.Pairing the ERC-1 with a USP-1 is an AWESOME CD player as it relay lites up the ERC-1 and makes the analog sound much smoother. The OPPO BDP-83 is a great BLU RAY,SACD and DVD AUDIO player. The OPPO is one of the best DVD converter players i have seen and I have had a few from many competitors. The OPPO should look great with your PANASONIC display.

I have both and I agree with Bruce, the ERC-1 sounds better using 2-Channel analog for CD's.
I love both and will not be removing them from my system anytime soon!!

Thanks for the replies. My BDP-83 is connected only via HDMI and I will leave it like that but if I purchase a ERC-1 I will connect it via the analog connectors.

If you are on a tight budget, I would recommend buying the BDP-83 which will give you the best picture for your 50" plasma and very good CD quality. Then keep an eye out for a used ERC-1. That is what I did. You do see used ERC-1's coming around. I saved about $130. For CD use, I would recommend using the BDP-83's dedicated analog CD output terminals. I was very happy with the CD audio quality with the BDP-83 until I found a used ERC-1. It was infinitly better than the two Sony CD players I was using!

I will agree with most here that the ERC-1 is way better at playing CD's that the OPPO-BDP-83. I have both and will be keeping them for a long time. Also try a HDCD with the ERC-1 and it will blow you away, if you have Dire Straits SACD, it also comes with the HDCD track and will play as such on the ERC-1. Sound is WOW!!!!

Thanks for all the responses. Alot of people seem to really like the erc-1 and the oppo 83. Akai, thanks for the link to the 83se, nice review. Looks like it will be the 83 and the erc1 or the 83se. Tough decision, I have a while since emotiva just clean out my pockets for a while.
thanks again

If all you're worried about in the BR player is BR PQ then there are many cheaper options available. You could easily get a BR player for $100 and then get the ERC and only be out ~500. But if you do have a lot of regular DVDs and very picky about their PQ then I'd go for the Oppo BDP83.

I also have the Dire Straits SACD but have not popped into the ERC yet (have done so on the Oppo in mutli channel . . wow) but I will do so today.

Interesting where did you find B-stock Erc-1's? I didnt know there was B-stock here, sometimes that is the best deal especially with a full warranty.

This is a very interesting thread, and I can totally relate to what people are saying (I myself used my CD player with HDCD decoding, from its analog stereo output). But I must confess, I do it less & less as the Dacs in recent receivers or pre/pros are much up to date than my lovely Dacs in my CD player. There is a sound barrier that I just or just about to reach & pass beyond. Am I the only one?
* But, it fascinate me in these days and ages, that people are still using analog connections! Would it be much easier to simply use the digital Coaxial or HDMI outputs and inputs to listen to CD 2-channel stereo? And with the advantage of using digital bass management? And also the advantage of a good digital room EQ? The sound quality doing it this way should be still significant enough and pleasant to make the jump, no?
Any thoughts?

Well it depends for me I guess, if by using the HDMI to the UMC for SACD even though it converts it down, as long as the sound is about the same I probably wont get the analogs, but if there is a noticeable difference then I will.

It all depends on what you're connecting it to, I suppose. I doubt you'll find too many recievers or pre-amps that have superior DACs than what's found in the ERC-1 for two channel playback. I use analog outputs from the ERC-1 to analog inputs in my Outlaw 990 in direct mode (i.e., no processing done on the Outlaw). It sounds great hooked up this way. If you want to go the transport/DAC method, there are more expensive options out there that may not net you a whole lot. Using a receiver to do the DAC for CDs is the last place I'd do it, unless you have an old CD player with inferior DACs built in. Also keep in mind that jitter can be an issue, as well. A well designed CD player can deal with jitter internally. Bypassing the DACs may or may not impact this (depends on design).

Any one compare the 83se to the erc1? I was debating on getting this player since it plays every disc out there. Figured I'd run the analog outs to my usp1 and the hdmi to my umc1 *when they show up that is.

Hi Guys, I just ordered a BDP-83 last night. Now I can give my beloved PS3 a break and now use it just for games when the kids come over. I also own appx 550 regular DVD's and look foward to the improved SD DVD picture quality you guys have been talking about. (only a 100 or so Blu Rays but I am steadily adding! lol)
God Bless, Brian

I hate to dig up an old thread, but with the XDA-1 looming and me contemplating an ERC-1 or a BDP-83, what would be the best choice if either will be used as a CD transport to the XDA-1? I'm leaning toward the BDP-83 as a Uni player as it is also DLNA compliant and can stream from a media server. Any thoughts?
