Well after reading all of the forum banter, I started wondering if I was missing out on something by not having more expensive amps. So... I took the plunge and ordered a new Krell S300i integrated ($2500) for my 2 channel set up ( 2 Polk LSi9's, an Onkyo AVR as a pre, an Emo UPA-2, a Wadia 170i, and a Marantz SA8003). I received the Krell and hooked up tonight. No bash intended here on Krell, but what a huge disappointment! Compared to my Emo, the bass was totally lost, depth and detail were horrible. I was just shocked. I fiddled around with it for about an hour, yanked it out, hooked my Emo back up and all is well again. The Krell will be returned tomorrow. Please forgive me! I will never doubt again!!

I know. I read on Polk audio quite a bit and they do get a little EMOtional over there.

Krell looks pretty, but I don't care for their sound either. I'll take any Emo amp and the cash difference any day! . . . .and buy more Emo gear.

Krell isn't the same company it was 10 years ago. Still riding the name, but the amps are long gone.

I have a friend who had an older Krell 300. I was never very much impressed. When he moved to Bryston mono blocks the sound got a lot better. Later he bought Bell Canto's. They also sounded good. All of these are way more expensive then Emotiva. I would have to do a side by side to see which I would prefer. Bryston, Bell Canto or Emotiva. I've never heard the really expensive Krell's. One amp I was very much impressed with is the Jeff Roland. The I realized it is based on the LM375 chips. So I build a similar amp. Now my lm375 had a problem and I ordered the XPA-3s. They have a different sonic impact. I think the lm375 have a smoother mid range but the XPA-3 have more bass control. The question is what is better?

It sounded very forward to me, but after about 20+ hours of listening, the sound 'warmed up' and I enjoy it more and more everyday...

I would say the same thing. Let the Krell break in for a while and then do the comparison.

The gear that is "better" for you is what you like the most. It varies with each user.

They were playing on a B&W Nautilus 802's. I do like both the LM375 amps as well as the Emotiva's although the sonic signature is different. Every time you change a component the sound changes and everything else needs reevaluations. I agree that the sound changes for a while. Also my Emotiva's need a warm up time. I don't like the sound for the first 20-30 minutes after I turn them on (Is this the getting used period or is it real?).

I might have bought the break in deal if the Krell had sounded at least respectable. It was so far off I saw no way a break in would ever make it right. I got my RA number today and it is going back. The sales guy did try to talk me into keeping it for a 100 to 200 hour break in period, but I declined. I seriously doubt I will ever buy an amp that is not an Emotiva in the future.

I honestly don't understand why folks get so emotional about brands. It's not like amps and speakers are their kids or something. Sure, everybody has personal experiences that form opinions. I think forums are for sharing those things. My personal experience is that Emo was a better product than a Krell unit I tried out. So that makes my opinion of Emotiva pretty good. If that makes me an Emoette, cool. I actually dont even see a negative conotation to that either. But when you report your experiences in a factual way on these forums and guys start freaking out and trying to discredit and bash you, I really think they are just nut jobs and don't have much of a life.

A funny thing on the way to the Emo online store...despite all the posts about the Polk forum being unkind to Emo folks, it was actually the Polk forum that first led me to Emo. I had found a used Rotel amp there and was thinking of getting a couple used Rotels for my HT to supplement the one I already had.
Thanks to all the noise about Emo over there, I thought, "who the heck are these Emo guys", so I checked out Emo's website.
A quick tour of that taught me that I could get a wicked 5 channel amp for the price of the 2 used Rotels I was seeking. I then read some posts here and found rave reviews and some great helpers w/advice. The 30-day return policy iced the deal, and I bought by XPA-5. It so badly smoked the one Rotel I already had powering my fronts that I kept it and abandoned my plan for more used Rotels!
The rest...as they say...is history.
And, it's interesting to hear the Krell vs. Emo comparo also...
