I feel stupid asking this but what does DSD stand for and what exactly is the issue associated with the UMC-1?
So many people have commented on comments about this topic that I can't find the origin.
Sorry if I have missed something obvious.

Thanks for the links.
So am I correct in saying, this is not a problem if I do not have any SACDs?

Perhaps the "problem" is that you need to get some SACDs!
Most SACDs come with a CD layer (hybrid), if that is what you mean. But SACDs are NOT a problem with the UMC-1.

I'll second that. SACD is a terrific format and there's an excellent catalogue if you enjoy classical.

I also feel stupid saying this, but how do you connect an Oppo BDP-83 to the UMC-1 to play SACD or DVD-Audio? HDMI or 7.1 analog with RCA cables? Both, or is one better?
Sorry to sound dumb, but my last receiver had composite connections and I have never owned a SACD or DVD-Audio player.
Thanks

Either connection will work. What is better is up to your ears.

I've tried both ways and am hard pressed to hear a difference. HDMI is easier with the one connection. You have the luxury of doing it either way...but you will have to go into the Oppo setup menu and select your choice.

It's noted by some reviewers that the oppo 83 excells in digital domain, the hdmi being the best connection, ymmv. True, but the 83 also has a dedicated DSD-capable DAC with separate stereo analog output. So, the 83 might be a step up for analog stereo SACD playback. I say might, because studies have shown the difference between DSD-native DACS and a good high-quality PCM conversion are nearly impossible to hear. That said, the Oppo 83SE is certainly just about the best choice for optimum SACD quality with it's superior multi-channel DACs. I'm more of a BDP-80->HDMI->UMC-1 kind of guy, as that will still sound plenty sweet for a lot less change! - LoopinFool

Thanks Please be patient with me as I sometimes feel very silly, but: To carry this a little farther, what settings in the BDP-83 and the UMC-1 does one select to get proper sound for SA-CD and DVD-A. I don't seem to get any surround effect. My preference would be to hook up via HDMI but would use whatever worked best. Thanks in advance to all that try to help on this. Thomas

In the Oppo, you must select multi out via HDMI...and not stereo out which I think is the default. Otherwise the Oppo is outputting in 2 channel mode. The UMC will recognize the multi and process it accordingly.

I might have the SA-CD figured out now but I also have some DTS music discs that when I play sound harsh and distorted. Is there some selection in the UMC-1 menu (or the Oppo menu) that I need to be selecting?
Again, thanks for your help.

Maybe. In the Oppo, set the unit to output *bitstream which'll send the DTS to the UMC to be decoded. I have several DTS music disc and have no trouble. In the UMC, you can hit the status button and see if it displays DTS. If it says PCM, then it is the Oppo bitstream issue. If it displays DTS, you may have to go into the UMC input setup and select DTS (several options are in there, so scroll over to DTS). IF it still sounds bad, it could be a glitch in the UMC...in which case, while it is playing, switch inputs and come back to the music input and see if that does not clear it up.
*The Oppo may call it RAW...that's the one you want.

I'm not quite there yet...my HDMI output from the Oppo was/is bitstream and the status button on the UMC shows DTS but sound is still distorted. I switched inputs and came back to the music and the distortion still seems to be there. Maybe it is just the dics itself and I need to try a different one. Thanks for the help.
