I understand that amp brands can have varying 'types' of sound due to the design and power amplification ratings, but I haven't read much about A/V Processors having an affect on sound quality as well. Most of the reviews seem to center around the connectivity options of a processor and ease of set-up/use.
My question is: can I expect a substantial gain in SQ by replacing my receiver (Marantz SR 8001) with a dedicated A/V Processor (i.e. UMC/USP or XMC)?
Since the Marantz does what I need in terms of connectivity options and setup/ease of use, I am not looking to upgrade for those reasons only. Increased sound quality would be the primary reason for me to upgrade to an EMO processor.

I totally agree with dyjohn... I think you'll be very surprised at the SQ difference between the 2 units..

That is good news, I forgot to mention I already have an XPA-2 and XPA-3, so I'm really just using my A/V receiver as a Pre/Pro anyway.
However, I feel that the SQ is missing something that I can't put my finger on it. I was hoping that the Cirrus processing chips would be of higher quality than what is in the Marantz, and it sounds like it is.
