Just curious, how many of you folk did a factory reset on the UMC after the upgrade? I know there was some issue with corruption on input names etc and it seems most people just renamed them and moved on, but if there is corruption elsewhere, who knows what might be screwed up and how it effects it.....?? Might pay to do a full reset and try again, cant hurt, can it? ....you first! I just spent the last two days resetting and reformatting my PVR! Also, kinda hard when I dont have a UMC

If I had a UMC-1 in hand I would.

Agreed - from many years using computer BIOSes, when you upgrade you really do need to do a reset to the defaults as they sometimes move data around and "bad" data can still be left from the previous version. My guess is the screwed up names are registers that have been swapped in the new code, it's is likely there are other (hidden) areas where this may have happened too. If you have no done a full reset, please do and let us know if anything changes. I don't have my UMC-1 quite yet (maybe next week) but I totally see what you guys are saying here about corrupted files names. It would totally explain why some are getting their system dialed in to where it sounds amazing but the xover settings and distances are way off. Might just be a display error. Here's hoping for you guys a reset would fix it!

I've reset numerous times with no effect. I have not reloaded the FW, yet, as my front display shows the correct FW version. Plus, it was such a royal pain to do in the first place.

Sorry Ratmice, I didn't mean to imply that you or others had not done the install right or hadn't done a factory reset. I was just thinking aloud (while typing) about how this might explain why it works for a few sans correct display. Hope I didn't offend you Chris

I did a factory reset before doing anything else.
The fact that the directions state "your settings will be retained" and the first thing people see is their names messed up is very disconcerting to me. (Mine were also messed up upon finishing the firmware upgrade)
That being said, I ran EmoQ after updating and got some strange values (250hz for fronts) so I just ignored it. After reading some suggestions on here, I tried it again and it could't complete the operating, dying when attempting to get levels for the Back Right speaker. I don't have a back right speaker.
For me, it's completely broken. I've put in a request to support, but haven't received a response yet. I'll update when I hear more.

I had alot of the same problems, fronts set to 250hz, sub set to 0hz, it set levels and crossovers for speakers I didn't have. It also ran the subwoofer section twice at the end after the results were already shown on the menu. It would set any eq setting for the subwoofer at all and when I tried manually adjusting them it made no effect on the sub. I sent mine back yesterday for repair. Your better off calling them, they answer quickly and can help determine if you need to send it in.

I am the OP for this thread.
I have just completed a manual calibration of my system. Here are some comments - I might have to eat crow.
It turns out that the 250 Hz setting for the LCR is justifiable because of a large dip at 125 Hz. After I calibrated and before I did anything else, I set the cutoff to 80 Hz for these speakers. Same with the Subwoofer - 80 Hz. It was apparent that the sub's equalization should not be +10 dB for the upper frequencies (or so I thought).
The manual calibration and the emo-q calibration look very similar.
Could someone that is used to running REW or something similar perform an emo-q calibration and without changing anything, run REW.
I am begininng to believe that while something doesn't seem correct, the problem may be in our rooms and in our interpretation of the data. I found it very necessary after I applied the equalization factors that I readjust the speaker levels!!! (very necessary).
I haven't seen Big Dan's video but, I am hoping that our problem is that we haven't been told that we must perform some step such as adjusting level after applying equalization or something.
BTW - with calibration, the sound is great!

Maybe a description of the room along with results may be helpful.
We might be able to see if say those with hardwood floors, are getting similar results than those with carpeting.
What kind of mic is included? Are we pointing the mic straight at the center speaker or at the ceiling?
Maybe we can see a pattern if we post this data along with results.

I ran Emo-Q 3 times last night and the values were all over the place. Once it had my left front speaker at 2 feet away, crossover at 20Hz and the right front speaker at 12 feet away, crossover at 250Hz! It had a EQ curve for my back left speaker, (I don't have one), and nothing for my surround left speaker. When I level match my speakers using the UMC-1 test tones, the sub is WAY too loud. For me, EMO-Q is pretty screwed up.

My room is about 18'X36', 11' ceilings, hardwood. My listening area is set up in half of the room, with the rear speakers hung from the ceiling. The listening area is covered with a rug. I ran emo-Q with the mic at my listening position with the mic pointing straight up, and got very good results.
I did not do a factory restart. I just followed the instructions for the update using a vista 32 bit computer with only minor issues. It sounds like I got pretty lucky. I hope you all can figure it out!

I just called and gave my cc info for the UMC-1. ;D . (I am having them ship it with the 4 UPA-1s that are shipping early next week.)
The UMC-1 will be replacing my Marantz SR7001 which has Audessy.... which I have never been happy with. Before I do the swap I will be taking some measurements of the Marantz using REW. I will then do the same with the UMC-1 before and after EMO-Q so that I can do a comparison. I would be happy to post the results here so that those wishing to compare the two room correction systems.

Yesterday, Steve and I ran Emo-Q several times. The results were hilarious. We also saw crazy numbers like the RF @ 250Hz and the LF @ 30-something-odd Hz. It was interesting. It was just as bad before the firmware upgrade as it was after. On one run, I kept much of the EQ settings, as it made sense to me the room would need correction. I fixed speaker distances (especially the sub that it thought was sitting in Steve's lap), levels and cut-offs.
I did some quick testing with the Emo-Q's revised settings applied and found that there was a slight improvement for me in my ability to distinguish the clarity of voices in Star Trek Blu-Ray. This difference was very slight, and it might have come at the cost of some other aspects of the film.
While we were quite busy just enjoying the fun, we both agreed that Emo-Q was pretty useless and would wait for a future update before spending any more time with it.

I also will be looking forward to your comparison of the two systems. I will receive my UMC-1 sometime starting the 22th this month. I have always been happy with Audyssey and was hoping EMO-Q would be its equal. After reading these bad reports on EMO-Q I dont know what to think. Will be watching for your report.

Hi ratmice, Please send me a picture of your room from all sides and your mic placement.. maybe we can help.
If you want to PM this to me, please do.
I don't believe you have a hardware or SW issue... Big Dan

I will caution that my room is fairly difficult at 17'l x 16'w x 8' h so most room correction systems will have problems with it, add to that my speakers in the theater room are all magnepans. This is probably the reason that even with multiple acoustic panels ... no room correction I have tried has been able to sound "Great".

I'm also a little relieved that you don't think it's a HW/SW issue. At the same time that probably means I'll have my work cut out for me to get the room sounding good.
