Looking forward to what people will be saying about their UPA-1s. I myself think they are a bit warmer and more open sounding than the X amps (not including the XPA-1). And very detailed and laid back.

What speakers have you listened to them with so far, Dann? Can't wait for mine to arrive.

And very detailed and laid back. Sounds great, but "detailed" and "laid back" seem a bit of a contradiction. I'm running my two channels system off 2 channels of my xpa5 until my processor arrives. Do you think I'll notice any difference, power wise, between this set up and my two upa1's that are on the way?

It's no contradiction. I've come to find Dann has great ears and I find that he's "spot on" with his gear "sound assessments". I think I'll stop auditioning gear in the future and just ask him how they sound. I don't think you'll find a noticeable difference "power wise" from the XPA-5, but you'll definitely notice a difference in sound. I picked up my UPA-1's today and have been listening to them tonight. All I can say is I absolutely love the sound they make. They are detailed like the XPA-2, but smoother and more refined, a bit warmer sounding and a touch more musical. The instruments sound more natural and realistic. I can hear deeper into the music. I don't think they have the dynamics of the XPA-2, but IMO, that's the only thing they give up to their big brother. One heck of an amp. Great job Emotiva.

I don't know about power, but the detail will be more pronounced, I think. And yes, more laid back. Not too laid back? Oh, no, just a more natural sound, I thought. I also listened to some Killing Joke (Pandemonium), which has layers of tribal percussion under the wall of guitars, and could hear them more clearly than ever. Finger cymbals and heavy guitars together is not an easy mix, and I've always heard them barely there, but this time, bam. Right on. Huge wall of guitar, and standard drum kit, but the hand drums, finger cymbals, etc., were sitting in there perfectly.

Oh, no, just a more natural sound, I thought. Oh, good.

I think the RSP lovers will like this amp...

Gotta be careful with words. ''Laid back'' will scare some people.

I think the amp is more "laid back" than the XPA-2 also, but in a good way. The UPA-1 is very neutral and it's one of the most natural sounding amps I've ever heard, extremely detailed, with excellent trancients that maybe make it a little more musical than the other Emotiva amps I have listened to(except maybe the XPA-1). I don't know if it's the low noise floor or what but I'm amazed by the detail I can hear now. This amp loves real instruments. I've listended to more Jazz and Big Band music the past two nights then I have in the past 2 years. I love live Jazz but usually recorded music doesn't do it justice. However, the UPA-1 has cured that problem for me. Even watching TV, I was hearing so much more than I was before. To sum it up, this amp is awesome for music and movies. Better grab'em before they sell out.

Gotta be careful with words. ''Laid back'' will scare some people. If those words scare you, don't get either a UPA-1 or XPA-1. They are 'laid back' because they sound relaxed...and the XPA-1, especially, maintains that feeling, even at a high volume.

It's not scaring me. My 2 should arrive Friday :-) I can't wait to listen to these babies! They should sound spectacular with my ERM 6.2's!

My two should arrive on Thrusday. I've been running my 2 channel off the USP-1 and my XPA-5. I'm looking forward to a comparison. I remember the warmth and laid back (natural) sound of 2 channel ampliers that I owned in the 60's and 70's. I know I sacrificed some power by choosing the UPA 1's over the XPA-2 but I felt for music this would be the way to go. We'll see.
