XPA-5 arrived 5 hours ago and it is running right now! As stated in many posts, that thing heavy enough to anchor a large boat. Unfortunately, it was a bit deep for my AV cabinet - solution... take the doors off and it only sticks out about 1/2 inch.
Hooked up to my preouts on the old Onkyo 701 and fired everything up. As this is my first true amp, I guess I kind of expected the power to literally blow my hair back hahaha but no, it didn't. What I do hear is a clarity from all my speakers, but especially my 4ohm mains. I cranked the volume to max during a battle scene of We Soldiers Once and it stayed perfectly clear. Of course, since loading all my music to my iPod, I couldn't find my CD collection to try it out, but the iPod sounded damn good in 2ch. I moved my 30 year-old Sansui receiver to the AV cabinet to run my zone 2 speakers outside since the Onkyo is only a 5.1 and zone 2 disables two channels when running. That old receiver still kicks it hard.
Going to be a while to get everything dialed in. My sub is a fairly small, and sealed, unit more in line for music than HT so I'm experimenting with setting my mains at "large" to try and get some more bass presence. Someday I might have enough money for a new prepro or AVR to get the new codecs but I am happy for now. I don't plan on going 7.1 - room is big - but not really feasible for more speakers. Probably need to get an SPL to try to tweak the speakers because my acoustics are probably terrible. Hardwood floors, 600 sq feet, and quite a bit of antique wood furniture.
I'll sign off for now and just sit here enjoying some beautifully clear 2ch stereo while I ice my back from lugging that thing around and playing contortionist to hook everything up.
