will umc-1 process sacd if running just hdmi from oppo bd-83 to umc-1 or do you have to use the 7 analog outputs on both units.
thanks hal

Yes, you can use the HDMI connection for your SACD player's output. In fact, using the HDMI will allow you to use the Bass Management and EmoQ capabilities of the UMC-1. If you use the analog connections, you lose that capability...

The UMC-1 cannot process DSD... so you have to set the BDP-83 to output SACD as PCM over HDMI.
There are tons and tons of info about the pro/cons of doing the DSD to PCM conversion (just like the argument about doing the HBR audio decoding in the player or in the receiver/pre-pro).
For most part, you can't tell the difference... enjoy the UMC-1

Either way, the Oppo converts it PCM or the UMC...ultimately, no difference in sound and you benefit with bass mgt.

It will accept DSD from the Oppo...but does not "natively" convert DSD into analog directly....just changes it into PCM . There have been some posts on this subject. It appears the Oppo says it's sending DSD, but silently converts it to PCM for you. We have it on good authority that the UMC-1 can not decode DSD. Since the DAC in the UMC-1 doesn't natively support DSD, it has to be converted to PCM for output and it really doesn't matter which box does it. - LoopinFool

Other than that...it is indeed funny.

Other than that...it is indeed funny. This is one case where HDMI worked well! The other alternative would be getting either no audio or awful digital noise just because the way you set it up can't work. The devices actually talked to each other and made sure you got the beautiful audio you wanted to hear. The Oppo just didn't change its display to tell you it's really sending PCM. The UMC-1 does say it's getting PCM. - LoopinFool

Some new DVD players from Oppo Digital, Pioneer, Onkyo, etc. now support HDMI 1.2 or 1.3 and will pass DSD over HDMI as well as LPCM. Typically, if the pre/pro can not take a DSD signal, you get nothing. The Oppo could care less what device you are sending to...it has no way of knowing the UMC is non-compliant and the HDMI cable is not going to tell the Oppo that it has to convert your selection back to PCM...if it could, the Oppo would clearly display PCM on the display. thus, I am pretty sure the DSD stream is going to the UMC and being converted to PCM, then analog. I confirmed the DSD over HDMI with Oppo.

I confirmed the DSD over HDMI with Oppo.Since it works fine, all this doesn't really matter much -- but you're mistaken. Support for DSD over HDMI is optional and yes, the UMC can indicate (via E-EDID) that it can not support DSD streaming. Lonnie, who designed the UMC-1, says it does not support it. It appears the Oppo makes sure it works anyway, but fails to change the display to indicate it's actually sending PCM. - LoopinFool

Then I'll pour me a big cup of "mistaken" and watch a movie tonight (if my power is back on... what a storm!)

Fine. Then I'll pour me a big cup of "mistaken" and watch a movie tonight (if my power is back on... what a storm!) I hope your power gets restored so you can enjoy it! I wish I could, but I didn't pre-order. We've missed the worst of the last couple of storms that blew through here. Sounds like you got it. - LoopinFool
