from my understanding the standard remote that is included is already a decent remote. I believe the "issue" was that it wasn't as "hefty" as previous remote controls. Is that correct?

The UMC-1 remote is completely functional and essential for setting up the unit. It is perfectly usable as the only remote for the device and offers a lot of functionality. It is, however, inexpensive and it feels that way, which is what many folks are objecting to.

No discrete input buttons is my only problem.

The remote that comes with the UMC-1 is fully functional. I believe the two complaints are (1) it doesn't have discrete buttons to select the inputs and (2) it looks like it came from the 99 cent store. Oh also, if you have a USP-1 there is a problem because they share the same codes. I do have to say that the remote does look pretty cheap but it also works as intended and it would be nice to have a more expensive looking device but it isn't necessary. You can't knock someone unconscious with it, however.

Also the remote is not very directional. I find I have to point it directly at the UMC-1 for it to function properly.

The lack of discrete codes is a killer for me. Once the direct codes (or if) get into Logitech's database for the UMC-1, then its a non issue.

It sems that many are NOT complaining as you put it, about the quality of the rmote, but the lack of direct inputs. I may be wrong, but I did go back through the posts and that seems to be the major complaint.
