Yep, you read it right, I said TUNER I actually do have a couple of great (IMHO, of course) stations in my area that I listen to all the time. They are however at the low end of the FM band and don't have the megawatt power of some of the commercial stations; so I'm wondering if anyone has tried out the tuner section and could comment on it's performance? For example, does it seem to pick-up a given station better or worse than what you were using before?

The FM side does a pretty good job. The AM side is a little disappointing.....but I'm guessing AM performance wasn't real high on the design priority list R

One would think that in this day-and-age, a brand new audiophile pre/pro with a tuner would receive HD-radio. I can buy a $100 automotive receiver with a CD player that will do that.

I don't even use the tuner at home much, but do think the RDS and HD radio are pretty nifty. Not a deal breaker for me, but one less feature any way you look at it.

What are some decent choices for external HD tuners?

I'm sure there are receivers that contain HD radio. Re: RDS... I am disappointed that with sooo many radio stations in the Americas, RDS has not taken off hugely. In England, where I hail from, we're spoilt by RDS and DBS. Re: External tuners.. If I were to shop for one, I'd look for XM support aswell as internet radio. I think that's the way everything is going. BTW, to the OP, I only use FM and have mu unit inside an enclosed wooden cabinet, but do have the antenna wire on the bottom of the unit. I must admit, I was surprised as both the number of stations and the quality of them! Hint: Do NOT use Autotune, it is a machine after all and will tune in anything that has an electronically discernible signal.. yes... including ... gasp.. HipHop & Country and Western! I had much better luck with manually tuning and storing my presets. Overall I do listen to FM (more than I imagined) and am happy with the UMC's built-in tuner.

If they had consulted with me I would have told them including a tuner at all was superfluous. To each his own! I agree. I don't remember the last time I listened to terrestrial radio in my home. In the car, I listen to the local NPR affiliate....and my iPod, and a little XM (mostly CNN). That's it.

There are a lot of stations in my area (portland oregon market) that support RDS and HD radio. There are a lot of tuners that support these too. Seems like most of them, actually. The tuner in my 2006 BMW is RDS as is the one in my Wife's 2006 Honda Pilot. The tuner in my current pre/pro the Integra DHC-9.9 is RDS/HD/XM/SIrrius.
