I've set a budget of around $2000 for my subwoofer(s) and I've narrowed it down to the following 4 options:
- 1 SVS PB13-Ultra - 2 Epik Empires - 2 Rythmic Audio D15SE - 2 eD 13Av.2 Sealed DIY Kit
From these four options, I'm looking for the most musical and the fastest sub(s). Specifically, I want lots of power for movies and when playing music loud, but my main concern is a sub that will easily keep up with my main speakers.
Given the budget and choices above, what would everyone recommend?
Amino, I already know what you would lean towards! ;D

Have you thought of going with a Velodyne DD-12? You may be able to find one new around your budget but certainly used is not a problem. I own a Velodyne HGS-12 Series II and it is fast enough for my Magnepan IIIas and when I used to own Martin Logans.

The Rythmik is the best of the bunch hands down(both in terms of SQ and are the best built and finished of them all), 2 of them will not only be "fast, accurate, and extremly musical", but will also have earth shaking output as well. If it tells you anythiong I sold off 2 PC13-Ultra subs, 4 eD subs in the last year along with 3 other brand subs and have settled on 2 D15SE subs for my bedroom HT system, and 6 Servo DS1500 DIY Rythmik kits for my main HT system. I consider the RYthmik 15" sub models to be the best subwoofer on the market under $3k. 2 of them together is a very fun experience.

$2k? Build one and you'll never feel the need to upgrade again.

Sorry cipher......
As everyone here knows, I built the Dual 13Av.2 sealed DIY kit. I plan on building another some day in the near future. And would personally recommend one or a pair to anyone seriously considering a phenominal sub. Regardless of what anyone may say about what they have or don't have, or how people had other subs and replaced them with a specific sub, remember these are nothing more than personal opinions and not documented facts, including my own.
Artiek makes a great suggestion about building an IB ....if you have the space to do it. I would have gone that route, however, I had insufficient space overhead, below my feet, or in any closets. So I built the biggest thing I could afford, and have no complaints. I also researched and listened to many subs in the year & 1/2 long evaluation period before finally making my decision. Mind you, I bought the eD blind, based on user reviews, and some other recommendations along the way, basically because I did not like the performance from anything that I had heard. I also figured, If I didn't like the eD, I would somehow find someone to take it off my hands, which by the way, i will not even entertain at this point. Ideally, if you can listen to any and every sub you are considering, and then purchasing based on what YOU prefer, and not what anyone says, would be the best approach possible. If you would like to hear an eD Dual 13Av.2, and you are near Brooklyn NY, I would be happy to audition my sub for you. Or, you can wait until a few people come over for the 2nd Brooklyn Bash (later this month) and can report their findings after they hear my sub. Otherwise, you can go to eD directly in Newton, Iowa, and they would be happy to audition for you....as I'm sure, any other quality manufacturer would likewise do.

I was wondering what amps people like in the DIY sub world?
I was hoping Emotiva would sell their plate amps or the separate amp in the upcoming 212...
personally, im leaning towards the ED LT/1300 right now if I build my own sub/s. Not sure I want to go the pro audio amp route, but another good option.

Check out a Seaton Submersive. I haven't heard it, but it is supposed to be impressive.
The dual Epik Empires looks impressive too.

In your stated price range there are a great many very good candidates to chose from. You would probably be happy with a good many of them. The important factor is how well they will blend with your other speakers and how hard it is to accomplish this task.
I agree with animo about auditioning as many of the candidates as possible, in your own home if possible, and select the one the best fits into your system. Synergy is an important factor that cannot be evaluated without trying it with your existing equipment. Many high-end dealers will allow you to take a demo unit home for the night or the weekend if they feel you might make a purchase. I have auditioned many subs that way.
What I like, or what any other Lounge member likes, doesn't mean a thing. What you like is the key factor in which sub you should integrate into your system. Have fun listening.

Those are obviously low-grade components there. Very beefy! You know what Animo? As long as you love your sub, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about it. I'm sure it kicks major butt in the output department.

Hey guys, I forgot to pop back in here and thank everyone for the great recommendations. I ended up ordering 2 D15SE's from Rythmik last week and am really looking forward to hearing some real bass in my place.
Also ordered a XMC-5 and a UMC-1 from Emotiva to go along with these. Going to pair all these with some 1.7's from Magnepan which should make for a decent listening experience in my home office.
Thanks again

I love my 2 D15SE's and will be keeping them for a LONG TIME. ;D Did you get the XLR or PEQ version? Another thing, with the quality of subs you now emply, think about a full compliment of wall mounted Magnepan MC-1's, or look at the MMG's or MG12's. I would bypass the 1.7's and save some money unless this is one BIG office. The key with Magnepans is to size them correctly to the room.

I ordered the XLR version and my plan is to use this output on the UMC. However, I'm currently researching XLR cables and lengths as I've never used them before. I'm also going to pick up a Squeezebox Duet for accessing my FLAC music server and then eventually pair this with the Emotiva XDA-1 when it's released later this year. The "office" is actually a fairly large room that was used as a second living room by the previous owner so there will be room for the 1.7's. I recently demoed them in a room that was a third the size and they sounded pretty good to me. These purchases are my first step into the world of seperates and some of these pieces might make there way into my main living room system and one or both subs might make it into the home theatre I eventually build in my basement. For now though, they will all keep me company while I'm coding! Pictures to follow in a couple of weeks once everything is delivered and setup.

LOL! Ya know? About a dozen people have bought Rythmik subs on this forum based off my recommendation and PM'd me thanking me for pointing them in that direction. Maybe Brian can give me a discount on my DS kits. Regardless Im just glad people took a try on the product only to find out I wasn't exxagerating just how good of a product it is. You won't ever see mine up for sale.
