Great link Ed! This should be mandatory reading for all humans!
I just saw that article and came here to post a link when I saw your thread. I have been preaching setting all speakers to "small" here and at other forums for 247 years! Most have frowned at my posts and said, but I'm not going to waste the low bass on my beautiful full range babies. Others say, I don't need no stinkin sub, I have full range towers! Still others say I like to supplement the low bass of my towers set to "large" with a sub
Well, read this folks. Then go out and buy the highest quality sub you can afford and set your mains to "small" as they should be. ;D

Is there a "bass management 201" course? I'm still a noob to the subwoofer world, and would like to dial in my subs to get the most bang for my buck. People talk about sub mics, EQ, REW and a bunch of other things, but there seems to be no reference as to what or how one should buy or use these things.

That first one is the same link as the OP. LOL I thumbed through the rest of those articles, but they make a lot of assumptions. For example, in this one: www.audioholics.com/tweaks/get-good-bass/multiple-subwoofer-setup-calibration-1They state: "It is assumed the reader is knowledgeable on how to properly use an FFT or RTA analyzer to properly measure system response. Instructions about how to use such equipment can fill an entire article on its own, which is outside the scope of this article." OK...great. Well...I don't know how to use those, so now what? Also, the only real option to them is a $4000 analyzer? For that price, I'll stick to my ears. People discuss the SMS-1 and REW. Is this something I should be investing in? Even if I have no experience with either? Thanks!

2nd link takes you to some basics. Articles. Another good basic is Aperion Audio' university page which is full of newbie articles. checkem out.
Analyzers are not for the faint hearted, IMHO.

After you read all, I think a Radio Shack analog meter (not the digital one!) and a test CD with tones from 200Hz and down to 20Hz or less is a good place to start. Do a check with the RS meter on a tripod and graph the results to see if you have a fairly flat response from your main seating spot. Any significant peaks at any frequencies should be reduced if possible. Moving the sub would be a prime method of correction. Next, use of a built-in EQ (like in your pre-pro or receiver). Later you can use room treatment or a separate EQ system like the Velodyne SMS-1 to get as flat as possible response thru this critical 200Hz area down to your subs low end limits at 15-25Hz depending on your sub. 31 band 1/3 octave graphic pro-sound EQ's like ART-351 are a low budget EQ that works well. You should try for a plus or minus variation of no more than about 2, 3 or 4 decibels. this all takes a lot of reading, work and patience but is not really difficult. I believe SVS subs website has some good advice on using the RS meter. Also just Google use of the RS meter for evaluating frequency response.

Topcat's mind is a little waterlogged after the recent drizzle in that area.

Topcat's mind is a little waterlogged after the recent drizzle in that area. You ought to see what my mind is like after a real down-pour...a "little waterlogged" doesn't begin to describe it! ;D ;D Luckily we usually are suffering from the "drought" syndrome around here.
