Folks,
I never did a "proper" review of the A7s-450, but I feel like I've had enough road time and enough tweaking done to do more justice.
I finally retired my 10” Klipsch Sub in favor of something that deserves to be in a 26 x 16 x 8 room. I don't like super boomy bass. In general I prefer the impact of mid-bass slam and the more responsive nature that this particular sub was going to provide me with. As many of you know, I went through several plottings of my sub's response and just yesterday trying out the SMS-1. What were my findings you ask? Read on..
I had mixed feelings about my response with a tweak Auddsey curve versus it being disabled. They both sounded allright, but I didn't really care of the 6-7db boost I was getting.
Below is what the SMS-1 gave me with the tweaks I already made to the sub. and the EQ.2. Aud turned off. Wow!
We moved the mic back and forth and noticed some slight variations, but if I ever end up putting additional seating in, it's a good thing. At one point I even tried integrating the Klipsch Sub back in, but with a SMS-1 graph like I have, and my buddy was like "why would you even bother"? Some of you know I wasn’t super impressed in my first days of ownership. It simply wasn’t providing me with super great output. Things changed drastically after yesterday after some further calibrations and gain adjustment.
The settings I ultimately ended up with were
80hz Front/Center/Surround
Sub Level Voume (tone control) 0
AVR Sub Level +4
Sub Level Gain. 1-2 o clock.
25hz Boost = OFF
EQ.2 Gain 80%
Let’s talk SPL. I DO NOT watch movies at reference levels. I don’t know how anyone can do that. I was probably at -13db on the receiver. At 13ft away from listening position I had the following great readings on the SPL meter and I felt the floor shaking. I have a buttkicker that I thought was on, and it wasn't. Whoa.
The scenes we demo'd were:
Master and Commander: DTS-MA; Opening Scene, Cannon Fire.
Terminator: Gas Station Scene
Gamer: Opening Scene
King Kong: TrueHD; Dinosaur stampede
Dark Knight: Dolby TrueHD, Freeway ambush.
Iron Man: Cave scene.
I was getting ridiculous peaks without distortion and absolutely no sign of the sub bottoming out. Didn’t really want to push it anymore at this point. ( NTRAIN: Insert Bass Mekanik/Xmax joke here. LOL) I know it’s capable of even more than that although I still have a desire to preserve the structural integrity of my home and my ears. You can't tell by crapcastic Iphone pictures, but the room is fairly big. 26 x 16 x 8. It's an additional 13ft to the back wall from the couch. I have 8 GIK Acoustic panels at reflection points. 3 on each side wall and 2 at the front screen. No Bass Traps.
My favorite room in the house:
The Beast:
The Rack:
Too many BDs and 360 games.
THIS SUB IS AWESOME.
I'm not sure why I'm not getting a flatter response at below 22hz, but that is something I need to look into. ED reccomends bringing my whole response down and increasing bass level to get a flatter response below 22hz, but not sure if I am into that idea. Might just try and tune the lower end some more.
At any rate, I am considering adding a SECOND A7s-450 into the mix later this summer which will give me additional headroom and will then be able to call it a day for my needs in the bass department.
