Thanks to Big Dan and Lonnie for kind-of calling me out in another thread to give the Emo Ultra 12's a try. At first I tried the best 2 spec'd locations for frequency response (via SMS-1) and they didn't have the impact I was looking for. I correctly adjusted phase settings and tried about 5 different combinations.
Then I had a friend over to help me tweak and he suggested on the front wall, not corner loaded. (room is 11x17)...AND STACK them on top of each other.
This is an AMAZING difference. The subs are each at 9 o'clock on volume, the UMC-1 is a neg. 6 and the SMS-1 is at 3 for music and 10 for movies. I DO NOT understand why this a totally different beast when setup this way but I am very impressed. I went and listened to a set of B&W 802D's today and on the bottom end I prefer my setup much more. (we won't compare the upper end of the speaker, because that diamond tweeter is in another league to my 683's). I ran the first couple of chapters in Toy Story 2 and I never thought I could get this much impact with this setup and no localization issues. Overall I am thrilled with the subs, the UMC-1, and anxiously awaiting the upgrade to the UPA-7.
Others who bought two 12's...try this and tell me what you think. Also, if anyone can explain why this is so much better...I'm interested in knowing.

The short explanation is that room modes and nulls not only run the length and width of the room they also run from the floor to the ceiling. Bass can often be very strong near the floor or ceiling and weakest at the midpoint height-wise. By making your sub taller so to speak, you probably fixed a low end frequency dip.
I think adjusting sub height is too often overlooked in sub placement.

I don't want to jump in, unless this music's thumping

You also gain upwards of 6db more output when the subs are stacked.
