I remember years ago (in a land far far away) that you should not power up an amp without a load connected to its outputs.
Is this true for any amp; tube or solid state? Seems to me this pertains to tubes.
Point of question, can I use my XPA-3 and -5 in a configuration where one or more channels are no loaded (connected to a speaker)?

I have 2 free channels, 1 on each of my XPA-5's without any issues. I have heard the same about tubes though that they need a load on them.

I specifically asked Lonnie this at Emofest. I want to run 4 XPA-2's to 7 Mythos Ten speakers, the amp running to the center channel will only be connected to one speaker. He said it wouldn't be a problem, saying the center channel will just have more headroom. Example if you cranked up the volume the six speakers hooked up to two amps would eventually max out, so all seven of them go up to 300 watts at the same time, but then the center channel would be able to keep going since only one speaker is hooked up to that amp.

I assume it will also do no harm to my Onkyo receiver, which after hooking up my XPA-3, no longer has anything hooked up to the front and center channel speaker outputs? I didn't notice anything in the menus or manual for my receiver that you could set it to just pre-out status for those channels only...

The only thing that I noticed when I hooked up my XPA-5 to my Sony ES while waiting on the UMC-1 to be released was that my Sony ran a bit hotter than normal. There was no damage done to the receiver and it still works just fine. To me it was counter-intuitive that it would run hotter with no load but I've seen other post that document this same phenomenon.
Then again, it could have been my imagination that it ran hotter; it may have been the same temperature. Still, I would think that it would run cooler with no load on it.

Ya, it would seem to me that if you wanted to use the Preouts, that it would make sense if there would be a setting in the receiver that would turn off those particular speaker outputs too.
