I've XPA-5 & UPA-1(just sold to upgrade to XPA-1), my XPA-5 gets hot within 2 hours whereas the UPA-1 hardly get hot even after 4 hours. Is it due to XPA-5 having 5 transformers or a big transformer inside? So will it be the same for the XPA-1?

Emo amps run rather cool. I've never had an issue of heat with my XPA-5.
Is your equipment in a rack or closed cabinet ?

You're asking us why a device that puts out 200 watts RMS x 5 runs hotter than a device that puts out 200 watts RMS x 1? Let me think about this one and get back to you.

I've got XPA-1's, an XPA-2 and an XPA-5. The XPA-5 runs noticeably warmer , bordering on hot after a few hours, than the 1's or 2.
None of them run as hot as my Threshold amps though.

After reading this thread I went over and felt my XPA-5. Sure enough, it does run warmer than my UPA-1s do. In comparison, those little monos hardly throw off any heat at all...even after an extended blasting session. Nice.

DC, I can't speak for the UPA-1, but my XPA-5 gets maybe quite warm after running full blast for 30-60 minutes or so into my five 4 ohms speakers but never hot. In normal use for background music or TV at average levels it gets only mildly warm. My XPA-5 has lots of ventilation room.

I just want to add here that although these amps run a bit warmer I do not believe it will ever be problematic as long as they have adequate ventilation. They are just pumping out some SERIOUS power. There is work going on inside these amps boys.

Hey Dave, if you find that your XPA-5 is running on the warm side, simply disable the Power Control; you know, that CEC feature. ...You can also turn the GUI Off and its video processor Off as well. ;D

I am unaware of any such controls. ;D ;D Since purchasing the XPA-5 I can only seem to find the volume knob on my processor...and it seems to only move in one direction...clockwise! Seriously though, I didn't think it was THAT hot...just warmer than the UPA-1s. Far from what I would be worried about.

My XPA-5 is super cold! ...When the power is Off. But when On, it is super cool! ...Warms me right up!

Unles it's too hot to touch I wouldn't worry too much, you will find everyone has a different responce to asking if their XPA-5 gets hot as it will depend upon the loads on it. Mine got used for 11 hours straight the other week playing from decent levels to very high SPL's indeed and was only just room temp to touch.

My XPA-5 is in a cabinet and after 6 hours of use (typical on the weekends) it gets warm to the touch. But not hot enough to scald. I can leave my palm facing the top of the unit for a few seconds and not get burned. Mind you I do leave the cabinet doors open when the amp is in use.

Mine only gets warm and never what I consider hot. I can keep my hand on the top as long as I want. I have it in a closed cabinet with a glass door and partially open back. I also have a small fan pulling air out the back. In the same setup, my Onkyo 807 got very hot to the touch even without the amps running. (I was using the pre-outs before I got a UMC-1).

Hey Lord of the ring, what is CEC & GUI? Been trying like u advise but cant find it anywhere. Did the rest of u guys found it? I think Bob was just cracking a joke with me. ;D He was saying to use CEC controls to turn my amps off with my processors remote if they got hot, thus causing them to cool down. ;D My responce to him says that "I am unaware of any such controls" Joking that I din't know how to power down my amps. ;D To answer your question though, CEC stands for Consumer Electronics Control and is a one-wire bidirectional serial bus that uses the industry standard AV link protocol to perform remote control functions. ;D What this means in english is that components that include the CEC protocol and are hooked up via HDMI can be controlled by one remote control, allowing you to NOT have to purchase an additional universal remote. The problem with this is that CEC is not implemented on all HDMI devices. Couple this with all of the compatibility issues that accompany HDMI anyway...well you see how this just isn't a great idea. GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. That is any on-screen menus, ect... Hope that helps.
