With the success of the XDA-1, I'm wondering if a dedicated 1 RU headphone amp won't be similarly desirable. After all, there is a large DAC + Amp headphone community out there.
So let's test this theory a bit.

They could just throw a mic jack into the MPA they are planning to produce?

Dotvibe, I think that is a great idea! Along with the XDA-1, I have suggested in a past post that (even with the phono sections in the XMC-1 and XPS-1) they consider a 1RU phono preamp component with the same look as the XDA-1. A 1RU headphone box would be a hat trick. I think the XDA-1 is going to sell like hotcakes and these two other units would do the same. What about a power conditioner in a 1RU or 2RU chassis? What else??? ;D ;D ;D

Noob question here...why get an external heaphone amp? Why not just plug into the headphone jack on your pre/pro? Am I missing something?

Noob question here...why get an external heaphone amp? Why not just plug into the headphone jack on your pre/pro? Am I missing something? There is extreme variability in the ease of driving headphones; and most headphones don't sound good if underpowered. If the variability in the headphones themselves wasn't bad enough, most of the receivers (and many SSPs) only include the headphone jack as an afterthought... so if you are serious about having really fine sounding music through your headphones it is a "crap-shoot" to use the built-in headphone stage. Some stereo analog pre-amps actually do come with very good headphone stages, but they are in the minority; and, if you own a pair of headphones that are hard to drive you almost have to buy an external headphone amp. Emotiva is one of the few companies that include a quality headphone stage in their pre-amps. If you know the brand and model number of your headphone it would be helpful in providing you a more focused response. Some brands are noted for being very easy loads and will sound good with nearly any headphone amp, within reason. The Grado headphones are one of those easily driven brands. I can get excellent sound from my Grados even when plugged into portable equipment. You should hear Norah Jones through a pair of Grado SR80 on an I-Pod or a portable Minidisc player. They sound nearly as good as Norah would sound when listening to her on your HT speakers.
