My home theater will consist of the following: - Emotiva XPA-3 amplifier (front L&R, center). Balanced and unbalanced inputs.
- Emotiva UPA-7 amplifier (L&R surrounds, L&R rear surrounds). Unbalanced inputs.
- Onkyo PR-SC886 preamplifier. Balanced and unbalanced outputs.
Because the UPA-7 has only unbalanced inputs, I will have to use the preamp's unbalanced outputs for the four surround signals. But what about the XPA-3? Can I use balanced (XLR) cables between the preamp and XPA-3? Is there any advantage to doing this? Or should I stick with unbalanced cables, since I'm using unbalanced cables w/ the UPA-7?

You can use the balanced inputs for sure. There are many who belive little is derived from using those XLR's. Some think they are even noisier than the unbalanced ones. You can even buy adapters/cables that let you convert one to the other. Experiment. There is no right answer....

As porcheguy says, there may not be much benefit if any but I think they make for a more secure connection. If and when I get an XMC I'm going to try Emo balanced cables.

Just because a piece of gear has XLR connections, doen't mean it is balanced. The only Emotiva amp that is fully balanced is the XPA-1. Unless all your gear is fully balanced (circuitry, not connections) you won't notice a difference unless you are getting interference. In that case XLR interconnects may reduce the noise.
