I know RCA really refers to the connectors, but what about the cable itself? Can I use a digital coax with RCA connectors where I would use interconnects to connect a pair of UPA-1s to my receiver?
Can I also do the reverse - are they interchangeable?

Can I also do the reverse - are they interchangeable? Eric You can do this, and usually, it works. However, they are not identical. The difference is in their impedance. A properly designed digital coax cable has an impedance of 75 Ohms (as does a properly designed RCA composite video interconnect cable). A properly designed unbalanced audio RCA interconnect cable has an impedance of 50 Ohms. if the cable is much longer than 1m or so it may not work, cause odd functioning, or begin to degrade sound quickly, if not used in a function matched with the desired impedance (Ohms). Short answer: They are not interchangeable.

I have similar question when I wanted to know which X series cable to buy to connect my receiver with the XPA-5.
Emotiva sells both X series RCA and coaxial interconnect and they are of the same prices. I asked them and Vincent Chen replied and suggested me to buy the coaxial to connect my receiver to XPA-5.

For that particular application it should not make a significant difference which cable you used. I seriously doubt you would hear any difference unless you are using a tube preamp to connect to the XPA-5 power amp. For the vast majority of solid state preamps to solid state power amps the differences between a standard RCA interconnect and a coax based RCA cable would not be audible.

Roadrunner is correct, you will not hear any difference. Go ahead and use whatever you have on-hand...

Well, I didn't even see that there were 2 different cables on the Emo store. I ended up ordering the RCAs instead of the coax. I think I'll call Sarah in the morning and see if they can switch them out since they are the same price.

I talked to tech today and they said that the RCAs were the way to go, so I left the order alone.
I can hardly wait until Tuesday's delivery!

Good for you. Well then I wonder why Vincent Chen from Emo told me to buy the coaxial

My guess is personal bias... or maybe he read that Blue Jeans Cable uses the same raw materials for both. If you really want to know why Vincent said what he did, this is the wrong place to be asking. ;D As the old saying goes, "If you want to know something, go straight to the horse's mouth."

Cheap coaxial cable designed for t.v. fitted with RCA adapters works really well for a digital signal. I would have no hesitation using it for digital, it has the same impedance.

I want to order a cable for subwoofer, should I buy RCA or digital coax?

I want to order a cable for subwoofer, should I buy RCA or digital coax? For a subwoofer interconnect, get a simple and solid build RCA audio cable (double shielded, or even triple shielded) with good quality RCA jacks.
