For me, headaches are a by-product of watching 3D movies, and as such definitely not going to happen in my home theater setup. To each there own, but I to believe 3D to be a fad that will fade in the future, though only time will tell.

I think that some of you guys need to be more in touch with the present world we live in! * Just 6 months ago I was saying pretty much the same thing as most of you. I guess I improved my life since then! ;D

I guess I improved my life since then! ;D I have a 55" 3d Samsung and an Oppo-93 so I "can" watch 3D if I want to and even have 4 or 5 titles but I would prefer not to. The 3D aspect does not outweigh the cons of having to wear glasses and what at least I perceive as a loss in pq. On a side note, I do like seeing them upgrade their line. And I would be very very happy if they would figure out a better update process than the 1987 update software they are currently using. After updating my Oppo I felt cheated of all the time(and multiple attempts) it took me to "correctly" update the UMC-1.

I too will pass on the headaches and nausea. I can't even play on the xbox with my son for more than 20 minutes without getting nausea, my eyes are just too sensitive to something. Same thing used to happen with FPS computer games, until I could afford better graphics cards, and was able to get frame rates in the 80's and above. I don't get the nausea in the movie theaters, and until that is a reality at home, I'll pass.

So, whether we like 3D or not, there will be a new UMC-1 with 3D capability (UMC-2?) that will co-exist with the XMC-1. That makes me believe that Emo has solved the issues with the current UMC-1, but that it is not cost effective to implement the change(s) required to make this UMC-1 function properly. Uhm! I say that because the bugs in ther current UMC-1 have not been completely resolved and Emo is coming out with a more complex version. Hopefully, it (The UMC-1) will not be abandoned until it is working properly and consistently.
There is a 65" plasma or local dimming LED/LCD TV in my near future. Quite likely, it will be 3D. But I'll get it only because the best technologies are being deployed in the 3D sets. Sometimes the 3D sets also display 2D materials excellently. I don't see 3D as a feature that I will likely use. I already wear glasses, and I'll be darned if I'm going to wear another pair over these. And please don't introduce me to contacts. I've given uop on those already. I'm not disciplined enough to use them properly.

Maybe, and this is just a thought here, the few remaining "glitches" that are hanging around the "current" UMC-1 are, in fact, hardware related and not addressable by further firmware tweaks. Since these few remaining bugs seem to all be HDMI related, maybe the next UMC-1 will simply contain a newer, and different, HDMI board which will support the 1.4 3D spec. Again, just a thought, but I can't understand why a "3D enabled replacement" would still be called a UMC-1...

3D is now a must! No, it's NOT! Well apparently 3D is a must for Emotiva . I feel bad for those that plan on selling their UMC-1 in the near future. With the price being dropped to $499.00 thats going to hurt the resale of current UMC-1s. But for anyone looking to buy a new UMC-1 its a killer deal. Kind of reminds me when the LMC-1 was being replaced with the LMC-2/UMC-1. Bill

"We are officially confirming that a new 3D enabled UMC-1 processor will be in production by the end of the year"
That could be a mis-print and they meant a 3D Enabled XMC-1 or a 3D Enabled UMC-2.

Bill, you did get my drift. My comment was made on a business standpoint. But people took it personally, big mistake!
And here's a fact folks: newer 3D products are better at 2D! Why? Because the technology (video processing) is more advanced and improved for that new & more complex 3D picture, and 2D is automatically benefitting from those advances in video processing for a better picture quality.
And I'm not the one who invented that! It has been said many times before in many HDTV 3D reviews. Even the latest 3D Blu-ray players (most of them) produce an excellent 2D picture.

Bob, I agree. See reply #25. 2D is definitely benefiting from the advancements made in 3D.

Bob That is only the case if a new video processor is used, not when only HDMI 1.4 compatibility is added. The UMC 3D will pass 3D signals. It isn't going to do anything different with regards to video processing than what it is doing now. (unless we hear something different of course) So for now with what we know, this unit will not have better video performance just because it is 3D compatible. That currently is a fact.

"We are officially confirming that a new 3D enabled UMC-1 processor will be in production by the end of the year" That could be a mis-print and they meant a 3D Enabled XMC-1 or a 3D Enabled UMC-2. This is the product I have been waiting for. I have a 1.3 processor so there was no great need to upgrade. Now dont get me wrong, my BR players are 3D and the Oppo of course has dual hdmi outputs so I just run an additional cable to the display. None the less, I would like a cleaner, more simple install. To those that think or wish 3D is a flash in the pan, think again. Like BR or VHS or any of the other things we thought would not change, 3D is being shoved down our throats. At present the software is at best fledgling, however, when it works, Avatar for example it is positively mesmerizing. So as the movie houses improve the filming process, the 3D experience will improve as well. Like any new technology there will be crap for awhile. However, the fact that most products released now are 3D capable means, there is no turning back. I watch very little 3D, matter of fact I just watched Tron the other night and it was not all that good. It had its moments, but overall, the 3D appeared to be an afterthought. Whereas Avatar was done right from the beginning and is bright, beautiful and a sight to behold. I cannot wait for the new product. Maybe they will have samples at Emo fest for us to take home and play with.

But I don't think the hardware has changed that much. If this is true, given the SORRY state of the the UMC-1 I am officially done buying Emotiva processors. In my books you release it rock solid or release it near solid and keep working until it is actually reliable, which it is currently not for many situations. I am a fanboy, but the UMC-1 is trying my patience and none of the firmware updates are doing anything to bolster confidence in their pre/pro products. I'll be pretty pissed if they discontinue support/updates for the UMC-1 and they will hear about from me!

Absolutely despise 3D. It's mildly interesting for about 5 minutes of a movie, then I want the 2D version to be playing. For me, it's a total distraction from the movie itself.

I don't have a desire for 3d either.
This new UMC reinforces my thought that the original UMC bugs are hardware related and probably not fixable.
Since I upgraded from the LMC I used my upgrade already. These new preamps will have to be something special for me to even consider them. Honestly I feel a little burned with the firmware efforts and will likely take my business elsewhere when I upgrade.

I'm down for 3D. With all the new tech coming out, the 3D dark days are over. There is tons of stuff coming out at CEDIA that will impress! I want a xmc-1 but I'm not sure I'm willing to be a early adopter. Firmware updates should be able to be done with a usb stick or internet, just like the big boys do.
