We are officially confirming that a new 3D enabled UMC-1 processor will be in production by the end of the year. To make room, we are offering the current UMC-1 model at the new low price of $499. It also comes with an upgrade certificate to use towards the purchase of our next generation processor (cannot be used towards the 3D enabled UMC-1). Just in case you missed that. emotiva.com/news/index.php/2011/08/17/clearance-sale-on-emotiva-favorites/

Can the original UMC-1 be upgraded by replacing a circuit board?
Dave.

So, are we talking about a new 3D capable UMC-1 co-existing with the XMC-1? I thought that we already discussed whether or not the current UMC-1 was upgradable to 3D and concluded that it was not? Can someone elucidate, please?

Can someone elucidate, please? The UMC-1 was not upgradable to 3D by firmware alone. The "new" UMC-1 (UMC-2?) will likely have some changed ICs on the board to be able to implement 3D.

3D is now a must! not if you just bought a non 3d tv and a umc-1 / xpa-5 in the last few months. id rather have a new umc-1 that scales video properly and doesnt drop audio channels. those two things are a must. 3d is a niche market. crackt out,.

A niche? 3D is now pretty much a 'regular' feature with all A/V Receivers, Pre/Pros, HDTVs, Blu-ray players, HTIB, and now with Front Projectors. Nothing 'niche' about it!

Mostly a must for you Bob. I've got no desire to see anything in 3D.

I agree, fix the dang firmware and get it "rock solid" reliable. I could care less about the 3D. Mine sounds so sweet when it isn't being buggy and that is the only reason I never sent it back. It is easily the buggiest piece of equipment with the most ancient FW update I have ever owned.
Hopefully this new model means a new fw for us who have stood by (my wife says stupidly so) the UMC-1 since its debut. I personally have grown very tired of the "audio" bugs on an audio product.

'Niche' in the fact that just about everyone here has bought a new TV in the last 5 or so years because of the digital revolution and aren't exactly going to chuck their existing TVs to go 3D. Sure anyone needing a new TV is going to get 3D now but no mad rush like before. I know my TV isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

In my opinion, 3D is a fad and soon it'll be over. It is am attempt by the major movie companies to pump up the flagging attendance at the movie theaters... They know that the vast majority of the public do not have 3D capable TVs at home and even if they did... the studios are not releasing the new titles in 3D anyway. For those that remember, the same thing happened with all that 7.1 crap. "This too shall pass". I'll await the day when 3d is superseded and I don't think I'll be waiting long.

I have a 3D TV but my prepro and BDP are just 2D. I don't really have a desire for 3D but eventually will get it with the XMC-1 and a new Oppo.
Only then will I try it out.
Dave.

Here's how it goes: 1. If you have been experiencing 'properly' 3D, then you know what I'm talkin' 'bout. 2. If ALL your gear is still 2D, then there is a high probability that 3D is not yet in your future! ...And you just don't know how close you are of a change!

3D blah, blah, blah...
I see this as a positive step, as it is a sign of a regular update process that I am seeing on Emotiva's products. I am glad that they are able to leverage their investment in R&D and be able to continue the product lifespan. I have been very happy with my UMC-1 and hope they build upon and improve this next unit, whatever it is called. I wonder what other changes this will have from the UMC-1. I would really like to see a change to EmoQ to use customizable parametric filters.
