My friend got the UMC-1 the day they started shipping and it seems every time I'm over at his place he has a problem. Sometimes the center channel audio just drops out, other times his screen resets due to an HDMI hand-shake issue of some kind. He has done all of the firmware updates but he still continues to have problems.
I currently have a Yamaha receiver that I use as a processor for my XPA-5 and it performs flawlessly. I'd like to go full seperates but not unless all the bugs have been worked out on the UMC-1.
So, have these issues been resolved?

No, they haven't although some say they have been reduced to being inconsequential. To me they are an irritant and reduce my enjoyment by just a little bit.

I seem to be more of an anti-advocate of hdmi now lol. But simply, if you can bypass having to use hdmi, problems should be nearly all but gone, if any are even there at that point. The protocols that are carried with hdmi are too inconsistent on their own with any and every device from each manufacturer that connects over hdmi due to imposed complexities in trying to protect content mainly, etc.

The only problems I've had, are lock on issues(handshake)and center channel drops with my FIOS cable box. Once I switched to component and optical for TV watching, my problems went away. Every other source is fine with HDMI. The lock on could be a little quicker, but that's a minor gripe. Overall, the UMC has been a great performer for me, and I've been very satisfied. There are better options out there if you need all the bells and whistles, but if you just don't need those the UMC is a great way to go. Provided that it plays nicely with your sources.

Why is nobody asking the question? If the umc-1 is stil having problems why come out with a new one in 3-D. Who knows, maybe they have fixed all the issues for the 3D version. Didn't you ask this in another thread too?

Sweetness! I'm not sure I'll spend the $199 for an upgrade unless the used marked dictates that I have it to be able to sell it at a reasonable price. If there's only a $100 difference between non-upgraded and upgraded I'll leave it alone. My plan would be to use my 40% discount and the proceeds from the sell of the UMC-1 to partially finance the purchase of a XMC-1 when it comes out. Until then, I'm a UMC-1 man!

I can't wait for the new FW update. It sounds like it may be a good one. Maybe I'll be able to go back to HDMI for my DVR.

Wow, say the XMC is $1200.. with the 40% off coupon and the new clearance price of a UMC you'd be getting the UMC for around $20 (if you were gonna buy the XMC). Even if the XMC is $1500 its still an amazing deal. If you are in a situation where you have a 2nd system that has the "leftovers" like your bedroom or office this would be a hell of a steal buying a UMC on sale now and then using the coupon for an XMC or something else later!

I presently have an Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR. I am using it as a PRE/PRO hooked to a XPA3 and UPA2. I really like the amps. The sale of the UMC-1 is a very tempting offer, but I have reservations due to the problems I have read about. Do you think it would be a good move to get the UMC-1?

I would be interested in the $199 3D upgrade for my UMC-1 just to keep it modern but only if I could do the upgrade myself. Living in Australia rules out sending my UMC-1 in for the upgrade. It's no big deal as I will be getting the XMC-1 anyway and either sell my UMC-1 to a friend or use it in my daughter's media room. Dave.

I don't think that the 3D upgrade is on my fortune cookie. I don't plan on selling my UMC-1 either. But, I'm going to get the XMC-1 for my main theater. The UMC-1 will do 2 channel audio only duty in my garage and get a receiver for the bedroom theater.
BTW, thanx Dan for the update. Hopefully, the baseless speculations can be put to rest and we can continue speculation on the substantiative issues like the outcry for the XPR-7 ;D ;D ;D

I think this is an extremely fair and accurate assessment of where the UMC-1 currently stands. I would add that, for some, the problems seem to still be bad enough to significantly decrease their enjoyment of the unit. I love it for 2 channel audio, but for watching video with many of my sources, it is still too quirky for me to say I enjoy it without reservation.

If you use a cable box or such similar components, connect it directly to your TV. Then, connect the TV audio via optical to the UMC-1. That is guaranteed to solve audio/CC drop issues. otherwise, eat humble pie and let Emo do your reflash update.
I used to report anemic surround output. I HAVE RECENTLY DISCOVERED THE SURROUND TRIMS ON THE REMOTE. (This public confession makes me feel free). Now I can officially report that thing is operating flawlessly (for me that is). Honestly, I dont think that some of you guys updates were done complertely even though it showed that. No offense!

Same boat here. My Marantz sr5005 works flawlessly but that price is too good to pass up. Any UMC owner with experience using a Direct TV DVR with any issues or no issues? My other HDMI components are a Panny Bluray player and a PS3.

Brian6751...I have a UMC-1 with DirecTV DVR, and I don't have any significant issues at all w/it. I have, on very, very rare occasion, had audio dropouts after significant forwarding (never on forwarding <2 minutes into a show, and only rarely...as in 2x in the whole time I had the UMC-1...when forwarding further).
With the prior version of the FW, I had some audio lock-in issues with 1 format (DD-EX?) if I forwarded in those discs (whether via my BluRay source or my regular DVD source). But, since the FW update I am on now - no issues w/that at all.
