Some long time ago when I spoke with Lonnie, the phono pre amp was intended for use with the likes of the UMC-1 which had no phono input. The XMC-1 is supposed to have a MM (only) phono input stage.

Just so everyone here in the Lounge, especially those of you that have not been fortunate enough to make the trek to EmoFest this weekend, the room with the XMC-1/UMC-2/XPR-5 etc., etc., had a disclaimer upon entering the room, more or less saying that these particular products were in no way indicative of what the actual final product (if indeed it made it that far) may be when available for general public release. So just because there is a picture, front and back, of the XMC-1 by no means defines any feature set or specification in stone. Hemster and I will make sure that a picture of this disclaimor gets posted just so no one is mis-informed.

Good morning Geebo! I hpoe you guys have a safe, educational and enjoyable day today.
Could you please post a pic of the XPR-5 and have Emo address the supposedly lack of 2 HDMI outs on the XMC-1. I said supposedly becasue, as LOTR indicated, we don't know if the HDMI on the front is an input or output. I was also expecting the input for updating the XMC-1 and a USB input on the front panel. Thanx

Ha ha ha! Jamrock, methinks you get worried a bit too easily. Why not just hang on for Emotiva to publish the specs of the XMC-1, when all questions will be answered?

Well, that is good advice. but someone earlier stated that Big Dan said that what they saw was the final product. Or I mis-read it. Yep. I'm going to calm down!

If anyone at the festival has a chance I'd love to hear about what is happening on the DAC side. Seems like we waited over a year and a half for Xda-1 and it appears that the product life was less than a year. Would love to hear why and what is coming.

I like the new look on the UMC-2. Glad they did away with the side strips. But the XMC-1 still sports the old look. :-(

Yeah, in the front it is well indicated; Phono (from one of the source button; Input #6). But then, you can always add an inexpensive Phono stage. Also, in the back, it says HDMI Outputs 1, in plural! But where is the 2nd one? * That HDMI connector on the front, is it Input #11, or is it Output #2? Anyway, it should be Input #11, and a second HDMI Output would have been real nice for people with both a front projector and a flat panel HDTV. Because if it is what it is now, Emotiva is simply closing the door to those potential customers that I just described. Bob, Big Dan said the front HDMI input was for a camcorder or a device like that

Thanks again George for your efforts, much appreciated! Any opinion from you folks on the looks of the XPR-5 and the UMC-2. I'm not sure from the posted photos if I like the new front face design. Why did they have to change from the current design. I hope they don't change the XMC-1 and XSP-1 before the release. Couple of impressions from the fest: Unfortunately, the XPR-5 was not hooked up, but what a beast of an amp! Beautiful, and classy to look at. It took me a couple of tries just to lift the front of it up a little. I believe Vincent said it is 107 lbs. Talking about power amps, Emotiva's Theater Room was powered by 1 UPA-7. The speaker setup was 4 x X-Ref 12's, 4 x ERD-1's, 2 x ERT 8.3's, 1 ERM 6.3. Let me tell you, this amp impressed! It was amazing to hear what this 125 wpc amp was capable of. The sound in the theater was loud, dynamic, and clear with no hint of distortion. It was at a decibel level above what most people (normal people anyway, lol) would listen to. The movie Transformers was playing, and the sound in this room would rival an IMAX. But anyway, the UPA-7 was the amp of choice for their theater. Vincent said it was a shame the UPA series never caught on as the noise floor was slightly less on the UPA's, there was volume difference of less than 3dB between the UPA/XPA's, and the WAF should have been a little better. He guessed the perception among the customers was that more was better, and therefore, the XPA's dominated their amp sales. One thing that I did not know was that the UPA-2 has an attenuator on the back for each channel. In one application at least, I guess this could be handy in a bi-amp situation to help control a tweeter that was "too hot"..... which we all have experienced a time or two. And about bi-amping: Vincent said all Emotiva's systems on display there were bi-amped. Emotiva's opinion on the benefits: Bi-wiring=NO. Bi-amping (using a speakers own x-over)=YES. Enough said, lol! The UMC-2 was only an appearance change. Mostly different was less blue lights, and a beveled front. The center 3rd of the unit was slightly raised, or forwarded out. I don't think it necessarily looked any better. It was just slightly different. The new X-REF towers, centers, bookshelves were there, but with all the noise from people going in, and out of the room I can't give an impression about the sound. There was such hoard around the XMC-1 that i decided to try to see that today. I guess what impressed me the most at the fest was the Airmotiv speakers. When I first heard the Airmotiv 4's I was very, very impressed. I entered the room, and thought there was a sub hidden somewhere.....but nope, it was just them, and mind you, this was just the 4's. The tweeters (folded ribbons are they?) were pretty amazing to me. I heard incredibly clear, crisp, detailed, articulate, and razor defined sound ( I can't come up with enough good adjectives to describe these!). I listened for extended periods, and never got any hint of high frequency ear fatigue. I kept coming back over, and over to hear them, trying to time it when there weren't many people in the room. Each time I came back to hear them I tried to focus on a different aspect of their sound. One thing that was exceptional was the "off axis" coverage of the tweeter. At first standing directly in front of the Airmotiv 4, and them moving more and more to the side of it I found the tweeter's dispersion width impressive. I expected more dropout. This is contrary to what I have read about some folded ribbon designs in general. So, I am not sure if Emotiva is doing something magical here or not. Overall the sound was razor clear, and defined with a very synergistic balance from low to high end. No frequency range dominated, but also none were lacking either. When I heard the Airmotiv 6's I melted into the floor, and I almost pulled the plug..... still might do it today. It's just that I promised the significant other "no more speakers!" So, ......you know I've got the scheming weasel thoughts to get around this situation, lol ;D But in all seriousness, the Airmotiv's are an amazing speaker design, and I believe we will see in the future Emotiva incorporate that design into some of their home theater speakers. Anyway, off to the fest. More later!

WHAT THE HECK??? I thought that the purpose of EmoFest was to INTRODUCE new products. Now it seems that not only is there NOTHING new for sale, but also that there's no actual dates for when new products will be available? What a bummer!
I have postponed buying a new DAC & Preamp while I waited to see what would be unveiled and offered for sale at EmoFest. If nothing is forthcoming, I've waited my time (and passed on some sweet deals that I'd otherwise have bought in the meantime).
In summary: BOOOOOOOOOO...

The UMC-2 and of course the XMC-1 have great potential. I think I prefer the look of the UMC-2 but it wouldn't fit in with my Emotiva equipment. I think I've decided to get the black trim pieces though.

Thanks for posting your impressions islandman. Sounds like they got the AMT tweeters right.

The XSP-1 preamp sounded great though and should be available by Jan/Feb.

I know this might be a touchy subject, but could someone try to find out if the XMC does bass management in the same "unusual" way as the UMC? I know Lonnie will tell us that it's "By Design", but it's a very odd design choice, so a more standard design on the XMC would be good news.

Urgh, I'm gonna have like 10K worth of upgrades in the next 6 months hehehehehe!!!
