So I just realized my radio shack meter max out at 126db. DUH All this time I been thinking thats my max for my sub. I want to know what I can really hit. lol IS there a meter used that goes higher? or If I use the radio shack meter and REW software is there a way to get more accurate readings on my computer?

The Galaxy Audio CM-140 will go to 130db. I know thats only 4db higher but that represents a little more than double the power. You can also purchase a custom calibrated CM-140 that comes with a .cal file made for the very meter you get. www.cross-spectrum.com/measurement/calibrated_cm140.html

Just curious; at what distance are you hitting 126 db? I'm guessing that there's no fine china or crystal in that room (or any near it)?

I am hitting 126db in my listening area about 14 ft from the sub. It seems louder where I set than right in front of the sub of same corner. It seems crazy I can get that loud with the sub only. Maybe room gain is doing it. I have 8.5" ceilings, wood floor, about 14x 24' room and my walls are the old school real plaster walls not drywall. It literally shakes every window in the house. The floors move about 1/8" You can see liquid move in my glass on the table where I set and even in the bedroom on other side of house the head and footboard shakes at certain frequencies when I run sweeps. Note...I dont listen at this level. just for show off to friends and curiosity of what I can do. I really dont want to spend more money to find out. But was curious what I really hit, plus wanted to try my mains full range then also run it to see if it added more. I need one they use for car audio boom off competitons. They go really high. I imagine with actual music with the same bass frequencies im going to be into the 130's. I know someone will say im going to kill my ears. nah, thats bs. Byu the time it does Ill be old so who cares. I have listened to 135+ db car systems since for 20 years now. I still have perfect hearing according to the dr. ;D Guess I have bionic ears.

So, you listen to music as loud as a jet engine at 100 ft? You should talk to Pete Townsend about that. But, you'll have to speak very loudly.

I find it funny that most of you act like 130db or up is going to make me deaf. Take a poll and see how many guys 35 and under have had car systems that do this with ease. My cars shook so much I could not read signs going down the streets. lol and mine was nothing compared to a friends that could hit 150!!! But he competed and I did it just for fun. I am not deaf or near it at all. AllI am asking is wherer to get a spl meter that reads over 130 and does not cost alot. Another note. People compare this sound to jets or gun shots. Its totally differerent. Shoot my AK47 or AR15 and you willl see and feel the different. The gun feels like its going to blow out your ears. Hurts like hell and ear plugs are needed. I made that mistake and me and my cousin shot both at the same time. My ears rang for hours and I could not hear anything. It didnt bother him but he is in the army so he is probably deaf from all the shooting. So without an adequate spl meter im guessing with all speakers running im over 130. Guess Ill never know. I bet N8DoGG has a meter that works really high.

Listen as loud as you want, but your question really is nothing more than a way to brag about how loud your system will go. Listening over 130db is senseless and WILL make you deaf. Maybe the fact that you are listening so loud means you are already experiencing hearing loss. This is dangerous and frankly senseless as it serves no real purpose.
Once you get above 100db who cares ? The decibel level and time of exposure are the most important considerations. Some sounds — such as gunfire, explosions, etc. — are so loud (140 or more decibels), ANY brief exposure to them at close range can cause permanent damage and hearing loss. This is why I always wear ear plugs at the gun range. Sounds at 100 decibels (such as loud music through stereo headphones) will take a while longer (1-2 hours of exposure) to cause permanent damage to hair cells in the cochlea. The frequency of the sound is less important than its decibel level and time of exposure. While you think you may hear fine, don't fool yourself, the hair cells are dying and one day soon you will be saying "what" a good deal more.

We have a co-worker that once was listening so loudly in a car that his ear started bleeding. He now has almost no hearing in his left ear...

Well the volume level at which you listen is your choice but I wanted to respond to your comment about how the noise from an AK47 is more severe and feels different than loud decibels from a speaker. You put a frog in a pot and turn on the heat and pretty soon the frog is feeling really good like, gee, why should I go back to that cold pond when I have a nice warm, perfect swimming pool here? So the frog just swims around, enjoying its time and then not too long after that, people are having frog legs for dinner.

I say crank it up till those amps can fry eggs on em and enjoy,,
just start saving for a good set of hearing aids,,
even those bionic ears will deteriorate with sound pressures at that level,, way too much history to support it,,
see if you can find some old gunnery sergeant to listen to your 130+ DB system,, he will feel the lows but not hear much else,,

Im sure I may be deaf some day as my dad cant hear from playing drums for 25 years in a band. But for now I hear just fine according to hearing tests done.
Yeah, maybe it is for bragging. But there is nothing wrong with that either.
I have no one to brag too becsause only one of my friends is into the home theater stuff and he is the one that hit 150 in his car.
I just want to know what meter can read higher but is not alot of money.
By the way I do not listen at this level. How could anyone. lol Its just nice to know what I have. If I had a fast car ai would want to know its top speed. Same thing here. Plus like I posted in another thread and you all said it was about bragging. SOme pepople want to know what cedrtain subs can do. If I know then I could tell them. Maybe help them decide. Geesh. Once I do find out I will be sure to BRAG BRAG BRAG. All this from a simple question.

Ahh the question. No I do not know where to get a meter that reads that high. I have seen folks use them but have no clue who makes them. (I flew in the Air Navy so they had to keep a bit quieter at night) I downloaded one to my iTouch but it only goes to 110 so that is not gonna help. Maybe there is an app that goes higher ??

Any hand-held meter like your rat shack is simply not accurate above 110dbSPL. The Term Lab is the cheapest meter capable of reading high SPL on the market.

Any just for reality check, for an ED A5-350 to generate 126 dbSPL @ 14 feet, it would have to have 112db system sensitivity with its 500 watt amp. It's a fine subwoofer, but that does seem a bit high... especially since 112db sensitivity is the theoretical maximum (100% efficient loudspeaker.)

That does sound a bit high and I don`t know if corner loading could account for that much more spl , but maybe dual stacked in a corner na still maybe not
