I have not been to happy with the subs I have VTF-15H so today I did some testing with a test CD that HSU sent with my subs .
When I played the test tones , I wrote down my readings with phase set at 0 , Then I set the phase a 180 and my readings went up 2-4 db
I watched a movie with the phase set at 180 and it sounded better to me
When I ran the test tone from the avr the phase made no diffrence ?

I have had this happen when adjusting my SMS-1 sub PEQ. It is mostly around my XO setting at 80hz. I believe at 0 the mains and sub are out of phase and canceling each other out at 80 he but turning the dial to 180 is bringing them into phase. I always attributed this to a delay in the signal being processed by the SMS-1. I now have disconnected my SMS-1 and am using EmoQ to EQ. I have more experimenting with the phase adjustment before I can comment further. Dave.

Regardless of where the test tone is originating, one still has to deal with the subs distance from the other speakers and even more importantly, interaction with the room. If the 180 position sounds best to you at your seating position then go with it. The vast majority of literature on sub location and adjustments will, in the end, just tell you that anyway.
