This may seem like a strange question to many, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with that amp, or another emotiva amp with low efficiency headphones like the Hifiman HE-6?
thanks!

I have wondered about this myself. I see no reason to think it would be a problem but I hope someone here has tried it.

I wanted to try it with the HD600's ( 300 ohm) but I was told it was probably a bad idea

I have a pair of Stax SRX Mk III electrostatic ear speakers that, while over 30 years old, still sound better than any other headphones I have ever listened to. They require a hookup, through their "energizer", to the speaker outputs of a power amp.
I have them hooked up now to a Threshold S200 power amp, but now that you've put the idea in my head, I'm going to give them a shot with the mini X.

I'd love to hear how that works. Yeah, Stax "ear speakers" are on my bucket list.

I'd love to hear how that works. Yeah, Stax "ear speakers" are on my bucket list. A few years back, the ear pads were deteriorated on them, although they still sounded just as good as when they were new in 1980. I went on line...and I was actually able to order replacement pads direct from Japan. They were reasonably priced as well. I also had them delivered to my house...from Japan...in four days. before^^^^^^...with the new pads sitting waiting to be installed. ^^^^ after^^^^. Not bad for 32 year old ear speakers.

Wow, you guys are a super active forum. If you wouldn't mind, I'd be super interested. How were you planning to hook up your HD600 to a tap? Are they balanced? My old Koss headphones are suffering the same fraying shown in stridl's first pic above. Alas, I can't order the replacement pads.

I don't think HD600's would last long or you would have to be very careful. Cans that benefit from speaker amps are a specialized beast as far as I know.

Those that have older AKG K1000 should give it a try.

I was talking to you about the HD600 ;D and him about the stax. Sorry, no multiquote. To hook up HD600 they would have to be balanced first. I hooked up a pair of HD650 to an old pioneer sx990's taps and it was really impressive. I'm pretty intrigued on getting an emo just to try out at least. Wow, you guys are a super active forum. Impressive, like you can hear it from across the room?
Or impressive like the sound quality was improved over standard headphone amps.

I don't think HD600's would last long or you would have to be very careful. Cans that benefit from speaker amps are a specialized beast as far as I know. Oh yes...those Stax Electrostatics do not plug into to a headphone jack at all. It takes some real power to drive them, so they came with a separate box that plugs into the 110 V outlet as well as the speaker outputs of a power amp. The headphones are then plugged into that separate box called an "energizer".

Yeah, those energizers are quite an interesting box to deal with the newer models don't require that and all the power is directly from the energizer. Impressive, like you can hear it from across the room? Or impressive like the sound quality was improved over standard headphone amps. haha, impressive as in high quality, although I'm sure you could crank it up to that level of power.
