No kidding. I'm happy that it's happened, but not sure whether it will actually take effect.
That being said, I always use Tivo, so the extra loudness is a good queue for me to quickly grab my remote.

ED...I CAN'T HEAR YOU...TURN THE VOLUME DOWN, THERE'S A COMMERCIAL ON!!! OK...thanks...that's better.
Damn, I hate the pumped volume thing on commercials...if the idiots who do it understood that the sure fire impact on the user is to a) grow to hate the channel and advertiser who does it, and b) hit "mute" instantly so we don't hear the blast...they might not do it.
Who needs a stupid law to make it happen? Not me - I am fast with the mute button when watching TV. Now, if we only had smart marketers to not do this...uh, wait...maybe a law might actually be more effective over "smart marketers" ("No marketers were intended to be harmed or offended in the typing of this message...")

The biggest offender in the commercial industry were those Billy Mays ads. Must have been that coke he was reputedly sorting that made him talk so loud. I've dozed off while watching TV only to have one of his commercials blast away and wake me up suddenly. Thats a real pisser IMO.
Since I seldom watch TV this new law doesn't make a whit to me.
I am watching the NFL game of the week right now but haven't noticed the commercials being any louder or quieter than usual. And nothing so offensively loud as those old Billy Mays commercials. Those bastards must have recorded those sound tracks 30db hot.

Just did a quick test while watching "Elementary" (CBS) tonight. On our bedroom TV the show is averaging 46 to 48 dB SPL (unweighted), the commercials are averaging 49 to 52. Still noticeable, but not too much.

I read recently in Jim Smiths book that the compression of the dynamic range is what drives the sound of the commercial up, not the what you read on the SPL meter.
This also applies to some of the latest pop usic where the DR can be squeezed to as low as 10db.

Yeah, the commercials bring everything up just shy of full modulation, but it's still measurably louder.

I have to say, it's too bad that he passed away, but I DON'T miss his ads one bit! (Wow, cocaine was really a factor in his death? yikes! articles.cnn.com/2009-08-07/entertainment/florida.mays.cocaine_1_billy-mays-cocaine-autopsy?_s=PM:SHOWBIZ) I'm excited about the new law. Hope there is actually some enforcement.
