I owned the original Olive music system years ago and can vouch that their DAC implementation sounds very good. That system was severely limited and proprietary, however, which is why I didn't like it and why it went away. This product looks much more user friendly and universal. If only the clever touch-screen interface was separate from the DAC side, so you could use it as a controller and put the analog section in your equipment rack. Plus I think built-in amps are nice for people who want a Sonos-style self contained music system, but for integration with an existing system they are unnecessary. Still, looks like a product worth checking out.

Back in 2011, I looked at the Olive and chose the Bryston media player with separate hard drive. 5 year warranty on the Bryston, and hard drives are cheap and easy to back up. I also have a multiroom Sonos system. How has the Olive held up durability wise? I had read Olive went through a period of hardware failures, but never actually knew somebody who has used one (forum and internet research was the source).

I'm in to test it. $375 and we'll see if it gets funded, but I'm willing to give it a try.

I have an Olive Opus, and it was one of the worst investments I've ever made in a music player. It cost over $2K, could only play tracks that were ripped to it, and it suffered from several hardware issues that resulted in three warranty repairs, and ultimately to it being put into storage four or five years agho and not used since. The DAC was very good sounding though.

This (product and business model) looks awesome! However, I'm unclear as to whether connectivity is available to my USP-1/XPA-2. Did I just miss this info?

I spend a lot of time researching my purchases. Generally it works out pretty well.

I have hopes for this new device from Olive, though, as long as it doesn't break by using it.

I believe the streaming advances will probably replace the need for an "in-system music server." Streaming audio, air play, etc., are becoming more common. As long as the resolution quality can be mastered, I think that will be the trend. It's the way PS Audio headed with their PWD/PWT tandem and Bridge. My guess is within five years, it will be perfected, and available on even lower priced AVRs.

If the only analog output is through the amps (speaker output) then I won't be interested.

No 20 year warranty on the Bryston media player? I thought they offered 20 years on all of their products.

Why? What do you use in your garage? I don't have a music system in my garage. Well David, If you a a Sonos S5, you could just put it in the garage and plug it in and voila!! Half decent music where you like it. The S5's are better than you think.... Don't be so hasty to dismiss them.

It's just they are not for me. And the reason I don't have music in the garage is because I don't want nor need it out there...

I have the BDP-1, which is five years. www.bryston.com/pages/warranty.html
