Hi everyone, Just started my plunge into the world of "high end". I had an Onkyo 818 that died after 4 months and I was able to return it for a full refund. This was probably a good thing because I used that money to buy a second-hand XSP-1 and XPA-3. The sound is truly spectacular. I plan to add a home theater processor next (Although the UMC-200 doesn't seem promising to me at the moment). I'll probably be here a lot in the next coming weeks & months so, hi!

Welcome to the lounge! What speakers do you run and what do you use for a source now that your onkyo is gone (sorry!).

Thanks!
I am using floorstanding Peerless speakers rated at 400watt max. They are considered fairly simple, but I cannot being to explain to you just how much they sound better in this new setup, it's like I bought a brand new speaker set. The person I bought the preamp from told me something that I now believe is true:
"You can drive 50,000$ speakers with a simple AVR and it'll sound bad. You can drive 500$ speakers with a good amp and they'll sound like a million bucks".
Still, that's my next thing for replacement, I'm eyeing the Goldenear triton two/three/seven, not sure yet.
I am currently only using a Rega RP3 turntable as source. I will start connecting the setup to my old receiver today (really old Kenwood, no HDMI ports but it does have multi channel input and preouts) and see how it sounds.

You seem to know your stuff. But in case you don't have too much experience with DACs, I can certainly vouch for them My UPA-2 was able to reflect the differences between several dacs. The one I prefer so far has been the XDA-1 but I haven't really experienced more expensive stuff. It will also integrate very well into your home theater through the XSP-1 home theater bypass plus you can use those xlr inputs BTW the UMC-200 is considered to have good sound quality. $600 is high for my budget though I can't find anything cheaper but maybe a used one would be a good buy (they come with a transferrable warranty). I concur with what you said about speakers. With my upa-2 driven direct from the xda-1 I was able to get good quality coming out of a set of high mid end pc speakers that had just 3 inch cones. Better quality than they ever delivered really.
