I thought about giving a standard review like everyone does and boast about how awesome this amp is but I thought I would go a little different route.
Instead, I will give you the review from my wife. First off, she was against me getting the amp, especially when I told he it would be in addition to the receiver and not just replacing it. “Why would you need that”? My simple answer was, did I need to put an LS1 V8 into my RX-7, no, but is it more fun now…
I am using the amp for dual duty, about 60% stereo and 40% movies. It is powering Seas Thor fronts, Sardonyx center and some crappy rear speakers. I am moving from a HK receiver that is about 6 years old.
I get home about 1-1/2 hours before my wife, so I had some time to play with it myself and test run it on a few CD’s. Before she got home I hooked up one speaker to my HK receiver and the other to the XPA. When she got home I let her decide what CD to listen to. She picked Led Zeppelin. I started off with the volume low and let her listen. Then I turned it up to low-mid volume and she continued to listen switching back and forth between the two speakers. At this point she say’s, well this is pointless… It is definitely that speaker and she picked the one with the XPA hooked up! I asked what is different… She started listing off things like, it sounds fuller, more separation between different instruments and sounds, I am hearing things in the music that she has never heard before. Even the vocals sound way better. Then she says, hook the other speaker up and I want you to crank it up…. So I do and she proceeds to listen to music a lot louder than she would every let me in the past. To say she was impressed is an understatement… but the kicker is I asked if it was worth it and she says… well a tiffany necklace would have been a better investment….
Now, as far as my review, this thing is a beast. I can’t believe my speakers could sound so good. Everything I have read about this amp is true, it really is a great amp for the money. I was amazed at how much bass my mains have now. I purposely turned my sub off for the test and actually had to check it a few times to make sure it was off. My mains were shaking the floor. My sub use to totally overpower the speakers and now I had to turn it up just so I could get some sound out of it.
This is my first “real amp” and I am slowly getting more into the audio/visual stuff. I tend to do a lot of research and search for the best bang for the buck and this amp definitely is. I originally went with the HK cause I wanted clean power and it made my old fronts sound good but then once I switched to these front, that HK just could even come close to powering them.
