Whether it sounds better than the originals will be subjective and totally dependent on what you like. The Barry Diament mastering of the 80 albums is still the best to me. While they are not perfect they are still pretty balanced, excellent dynamic range, and don't sound digitized. From the boards I've read the I-Tunes remastered albums the majority seem to like it better than the 1990 and 1994 George Marino remasters. The majority still like the 70s and 80s vinyl the best. And about half put the I-Tunes either tied, or below the Diaments. So hopefully the transfer to cd and vinyl will be a slight upgrade. I just happen to like the old 80s and early 90s mastering cds for my editions of the bands I have in my collection. I've bought some remasters but doing an A & B I always prefer the original or older cds better. I like more dynamic range than clarity and detail since those reduce the DR numbers and it makes a difference to my ears. I look forward to June so we can finally find out after a long, long wait for the sound quality of these new remasters. Maybe these will make me change my mind about my Diaments. I don't think they will but I'm tired of waiting to find out. I hope you're right, and that the new ones sound better than the originals, because the originals didn't sound very good (as great as the songs were, Led Zep was done a dis-service IMO back then...). Any hi-rez versions planned?

Been a fan since 1996 when I was 9 years old. I actually was at Guitar Center last week and baught the Led Zeppelin anthology guitar tab book for the first 5 albums. I'm just now starting to learn the first riff to Black Dog.

Whether it sounds better than the originals will be subjective and totally dependent on what you like. Yep, I couldn't agree more. May be a strange comparison, but a pure vinyl junkie would rather listen to an album with pops and clicks than a pure and clean CD. Me, I say screw that. Pops and click ruin the entire experience for me. It's like watching TV with a fly walking around on the screen; drives me nuts. Clean records are great, but no played record stays perfectly clean for forever. I'll take a good CD over vinyl any day for this very reason. I actually have some needle drop CD's of Zep 1, 2, 3 & 4, made from very clean original pressed vinyl, that sound very nice, so I understand the vinyl thing. The Zep 2 is Robert Luwig's and it's a 24/96 LPCM DVD-A. For the various versions and sounds of the Zep releases, I think it depends where I'm at. At home doing some critical listening, I like the needle drops or the Barry Diament. If I'm in a car or on a boat or outside etc, I like the George Marino. Mothership is the worst, followed closely by the Celebration Day stuff. TSRMTS and BBC leave me a bit flat for live recordings. Some here have said they think Celebration Day sounds terrific, which just goes to show it's just matters of opinion. I own every single format it was released in (haven't heard the vinyl though), and I say it sucks compared to what it could have should have been. I don't think it's a very good live recording at all, and could have should have been much much better. (I forget the exact number, but they had a ton of mics recording the thing spread all around the arena). So much that I say WTF were they thinking? Worst yet is the DVD and Blu-ray video sound mixes. Just absolutely HORRIBLE in terms of audiophile sound. Jimmy should have consulted the guy who did the Dave Matthews / Tim Reynolds Live At Radio City. THAT is an absolute masterpiece of live show recording, mixing and mastering.

I personally think Celebration day is god awful. the drums are way too over powering...I bought it and never listen to it (or watch it)

I follow your listening pattern. If at home I only play the Diaments. In the car, at work, or outside I play the Marinos since it is not a sterile listening environment to begin with so the little bright sound doesn't bother me. I agree with your assessment of Celebration Day. While I enjoy seeing Robert, John, and Jimmy still have the chops at their age it was very disappointing in terms of sound quality. It should have been a lot better. But I will still watch the blu-ray of the performance because it is Led Zeppelin even with Bonham's son playing on the drums. Bad sounding Led Zeppelin is still better than no Led Zeppelin. Whether it sounds better than the originals will be subjective and totally dependent on what you like. Yep, I couldn't agree more. .... it was very disappointing in terms of sound quality. It should have been a lot better. But I will still watch the blu-ray of the performance because it is Led Zeppelin even with Bonham's son playing on the drums. Bad sounding Led Zeppelin is still better than no Led Zeppelin. Oh yes, I still enjoy the show immensely, so I still watch it. It's truly great. It was Led Zeppelin's "greatest" concert. A far off long shot from there "best," but definitely their "greatest." I got my full show bootleg DVD of the gig on December 31st 2007, just 20 days after the performance, so I'll be you know what I did for new years night that year. Not that long there after my source remastered his DVD, and then he put it on Blu-ray, and then he remastered that. I have them all. So I have many options. If I want to feel like I'm right there in the audience, I still pull out the original DVD with the original sound recording, and put my receiver on one of the sound presets (like stadium or something). If I want the best bootleg version there is in the world, I pull out the remastered Blu-ray. If I want all the close ups and full blown movie soundtrack sound, I put in the official Blu-ray. What I hate most about the official release is the mixing. They made it a movie soundtrack, not an audiophile history documentary. What they did is pan the sound to their liking. If the camera is on Jimmy playing guitar, the guitar gets louder. When the camera moves to John Paul Jones, the bass gets louder. When the camera is in the back of the arena, Robert's voice is huge and echos, but when they do a close up his voice is tight. It's just the dumbest friggin' way they could have done it, at least in my opinion and what I wanted out of it.

Needle Drop CD is still digital and never close to analog. IMHO Nick Well we can discuss this all day back and forth, but a properly produced CD can sound just as good as an LP. Even many die hard LP guys will tell you that. Problem is most CD's are not done well. My needle drops are from Dr. Ebbetts (Sp?) who famously did the Beatles catalog. In side by side blind listening tests, you can not tell the difference between them and vinyl. Well unless you are one of those people who can "hear" a difference between 18 ct and 24 ct gold interconnects. Ask around if you like, but most will say they can't. I have been told by several die hard vinyl freaks that The Celebration Day vinyl and the Celebration Day Blu-ray Audio sound identical. The CD, no. And this is fact, I, me, Bonzo, would rather listen to a good CD than vinyl under most if not all circumstances. For me there is no such thing as perfectly clean vinyl, at least not for very long. Clean them all you want, but dust will land on the album during playback, and you will get pops and clicks. It drives me nuts. If everything would be put out on SACD or DVD-A or Blu-ray-A, I'd rather have those 100% of the time for sure. Just me of course. But hey, no need to keep this going back and forth. People can and have been talking about this back and forth for years. Perhaps a good topic for another thread. Cheers ---- Bonzo

Honzo, Can't wait to drop the needle on these,,,,,,,,he,,,,,,,,he,,,,,, Are they releasing any of these on Blu Ray? Nick Honzo? Honzo who? No word on Blu-ray yet, only hi-rez download if you buy the deluxe sets. This could be due to lack of sales of the Celebration Day Blu-ray Audio only disc, but I don't know. Only time will tell I guess. But since I bought it all, I'll be able to make some LPCM DVD-A discs and listen to it all on my system via disc, which is what I prefer. Cheers --- Bonzo

I have what is considered to be about the best bootleg of this show one can get, and right off the bat I am feeling just like you. I think this has potential to kick some major *bleep*. Less than 2 months to go.

Funny, just browsing the new threads and listening to Pandora - and Going to California comes on - I forgot about this song, it sounds great on headphones!
