Are you looking for sub $1000 for both/all speakers, or sub $1000 per speaker? Also, are you going for a 2 channel, 5 channel, or 7 channel system?
If you're looking to spend less than $1000 for two speakers, here are some ideas:
Emp Tek E55Ti Tower Speakers ($347.50 each)
A friend of mine has these speakers and they sounded really "bright" to me. The vocals and midrange were super super clear, but I found the highs to be shrill and the bass to be lacking (could just be me). They need a subwoofer for sure.
Aperion Intimus 5T Tower Speaker ($413 each)
I listened to these in the Aperion showroom for about an hour and really liked them at the time. In my opinion, they'd be a better buy than the Emp Teks for sure.
Tekton DesignI'm not sure where things are at with Tekton Design speakers. They are really affordable and high efficiency (which is good for your UPA-700), but there have been quite a few threads on various forums about people experiencing bad customer service and having warranty issues?
If you want to spend less than $1000 for five speakers, I'd look at some of these options:
FluanceFluance has some really reasonably priced packages, but I'm not sure about their overall sound quality. I've heard their least expensive 5.1 system in a non-ideal setup at a friend's house and wasn't overly impressed with their music performance. If you're putting money into Emotiva electronics, put a little more money into your speakers.
HSU Research BookshelfHSU is primarily a subwoofer company, but they have some pretty great bookshelf speakers as well. They are reviewed well all over the place, and when I heard them for myself in HSU's demo room a couple years ago I was really impressed with the overall sound quality and quantity of sound. I'd try and swing these if you're looking to get 5 speakers for under $1000.
Now, if you want to spend $1000 per speaker, I'd encourage you to look at the Aperion Verus Grand Towers. I own them and they are pretty awesome. My only complaint is that I wish they played all the way down to 20hz, but alas, not many (if any?) speakers do at this price point. Perhaps the closest one might be the Tekton Pendragon, but again, there might be some customer service/warranty issues there.
Hope this helps!
