My music room (former living room) is about 12' x 14' x 10' high; carpet floor, plaster walls and ceiling with the usual furniture clutter. It is pierced with two large openings into other rooms. I thought it had reasonably uniform acoustics.
Last weekend, I was listening to some music when I noticed a strong low hum. It was similar to AC 60hz hum, but at least an octave lower, a clean sinewave. I turned off the source and the hum was still there. Then it would disappear, come back, move a note up or down, and disappear. I finally decided it must be a diesel truck idling outside. So I went outside.
Once outside, I could hear faint music, with a noticeable, smooth, deep bass. I was hearing an outdoor concert at the fairgrounds five blocks away. They likely had some powerful bass speakers punching out the low powerful bass. Back indoors, in my music room (windows still closed), nothing was audible, except for those few notes of the bass centered around a certain frequency. Those notes where very strong.
Clearly, my music room was acting like an Helmholtz resonator, amplifying those few (nodes) notes. It looks like I'm going to be investing in some bass room treatment, to smooth out my room!

/b make your own absorbers and bass traps with roxul safe n sound.. 3in thick for absorption of 1st reflections and 6in thick in the corners atleast... 4 bass traps and 6 panels be a good start.. cheers |
