can I use an ipod as a source with a schiit asgard 2 headphone amp ? (obviously using a cable with a 3.5mm male end and male RCA ends)

Yes and no. The Asgard 2 has RCA analog inputs, so technically it will work, but the Asgard is designed to take a line level input signal, and the signal coming from your ipod will have been amplified by the ipods internal amplifier.
You run the risk of overloading the Asgard's input, and possible degraded sound quality due to having two amplification stages.
I have heard of people ruining gear (speakers mostly) from doing just that and running into processors/receivers and out to their main speakers.
I hope that makes sense.

Yes you can. Yes it will work. But....don't do it. You'll be so sad f you do It's an audiophile faux pas. Sort of like peeing in the ocean. Go ahead and do it once though just to say you did. But shhh....don't tell no one And Pklown is correct. we actually had a poster who burnt his tweeters out doing that. But keep it at non party levels it should be fine. Especially headphones, they tend to be more robust to clippingg.
