So I was on the road today when I heard on the radio that Apple downloaded the new album from U2 "Songs of Innocence" in its entirety to Apple customers iPhones and iPads without there knowledge or approval. So when I got home I checked my iPad and sure enough the entire album was in my catalog of music. Funny that some people had no idea as to who U2 are which is just another indication to me of how old I am LOL. I myself like U2. Not that I am a big fan but I do like them so for me this was a good deal and I had heard some of the songs from the album so I was ahead of the game. What bothers me is the idea that Apple has the power to manipulate my property without me knowing it. It also bothers me to think that if Apple can do it who else can do it.

Interesting, I also have it on my iThings, but not in iTunes on my Mac. I agree that downloading without your knowledge isn't something I'd like to see too often, but it probably goes more like - they gave you a free album in your iTunes account, and your devices were set to automatically download whatever you'd purchased in the store. I haven't looked lately but I think you can change those settings to keep that from happening. On the whole I'll take it.

OK, so I tested that theory by going to my Mac iTunes and choosing Store > Check for Available Downloads. It says 'All purchases have been downloaded for this Apple ID', so it doesn't seem like they gave you the album. Interesting marketing?

OK, further discovery. It's not on your device, you can stream it from iCloud, so they've given you access to music and presumably they can take it away, but it's not using any space and you don't own it.
Edit: You can also play it from iRadio on iTunes, it's called First Play - U2 ..., there's also a First Play - Tim McGraw album so maybe they're promoting artists this way (though Tim McGraw didn't show up on my iPhone).

You can download it free if you wish, or stream via the cloud. It is merely an Icon on your device until you choose to download, just a link to a cloud stream.

I guess in all that legal mambo jumbo 2 page thingy we're all too happy to check off there some speculation allowing Apple diddle to their hearts content!
I'm too guilty of the click dash.

Its on my phone too. WITHOUT my permission. Well it is just a streaming link unless you click to download it. But others like you have been bothered by it so they've released a tool to allow you to opt out and remove it. I would agree that you shouldn't need a tool to remove something you didn't ask for. Like I said I am not bothered by Apple giving me something for free. No matter how you listen to it it is still free unless Apple decides to erase it from the cloud. It's not what they did but how they did it. As far as whose property it is this is my iPad and only I should have the right to put in or take out what I want. The mere idea of Apple having the capability of infringing on my rights could be something of a legal matter. I feel like it is in part a control that they have and I really do not like it. All that said I just feel like i was intruded upon.

I think it would have been different if Apple would have sent an e-mail or had a link in the itunes store to DL the album for free, if you wanted it. What they did is not cool at all.

It also bothers me to think that if Apple can do it who else can do it. Why does it bother you that they can give you something for free? That's weird. Now what should bother you is that they probably have the ability to remove your music from the library. Amazon took a lot of heat a few years ago when they removed purchased books from people's libraries for some reason, and that book was 1984. Now that's really bad. I'm sure Apple can do the same. This is one reason I avoid them and others that use proprietary systems for distributing music as well as DRM. I refuse to give something up just because some corporation has decided I can no longer own it.

Relax - Apple does not have access to your device, nor will they remove music from it. They simply made the music available for download for FREE in your iTunes account. You can chose to stream it or download it and it's yours. - permanently. You will notice a smal cloud icon next to the songs. This means it is available in the cloud via your iTunes account. If you don't like U2, just select those songs and delete them. This is exactly why I hate buying gifts, etc. for people. They always find a reason to complain or ask for more. Would it be an intrusion if a software update was installed on your computer? You didn't ask for that either, right? And in this case nothing was downloaded at all. I just think sometimes we've become a nation of whiners and complainers. No offense to anyone specifically, just read some of the posts on this forum, which is why I rarely post here anymore. Sorry for the rant.

You not not looking pass getting a free upload of music. It seems that they are testing the waters as far as what they can and cannot do both legally and in the world of high tech.

Sorry for the rant. I don't believe that Apple does not have the capability to access your computer. Not in today's world. I am grateful for the availability of getting free music but it is how Apple did it as I have said before this post. As far as the software updates, as far as I know you and I as Apple cusumers get notified about the software update as well as getting an explanation as to what the update is for in relation to the program. No offense taken by the way. Your are entitled to your opinion but I like to clear something up. It's ok to rant. It relieves stress. My complaining (if that is what some people what to call it) only comes from Apples lack of notification to make people aware of what they are doing. Money and power are great swords to wield in today's world and I thing people should be more aware of that power more than being a part of it.
