I have fallen in love with my xmc with my mythos ST-L'S. Enough so, that I am slowly getting back into music. (Was pretty heavy into music until I had an accident building the batsuit severing my left hands nerves (can no longer play guitar)). The catch is, that I am finding that I really like the bluray music. I don't do country, but I am open to just about anything else. What do you guys think are the best in audiophile quality bluray music?
Tony
Are you referring to Blue-ray Audio discs or Blu-rays as in musical concerts with video?
If you're looking for Blu-ray Audio here are some suggestions....
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing (one of the absolute best recordings I have - stellar - and also in 5.1)
Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning
Bryan Adams - Reckless (recently released, has a 5.1 mix and the sound is incredibly good - I was pleasantly surprised with how good it is)
Supertramp - Crime of the Century (recently released after many delays - 2-channel only, classic album - not much else to say, and sounds good)
Supertramp - Breakfast In America (great album, but the sound on this one is not as good as some - still good but not great IMO)
Rolling Stones - GRRR (a great collection of songs - nice sound)
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life (some good songs, and surprisingly good sound quality)
Yes - The Yes Album (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
Yes - Relayer (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
Yes - Close To The Edge (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
Gentle Giant - The Power And the Glory (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix, and a somewhat unique disc (to date) - has some video/lyrics instead of the typical static images)
Opeth - Pale Communion (Steven Wilson mastering - 5.1 mix)
Rush - 2112
Rush - Moving Pictures
Rush - Fly By Night
Rush - Signals
Tom Petty - Mojo
Tom Petty - Damn The Torpedoes
Tom Petty - Hypnotic Eye
Bob Marley - Legend 30th Anniversary (get the 30th Anniversary version of CD/Blu-ray that was released mid-2014 - it's better than the HFPA version and has a 5.1 mix)
Patricia Barber - Modern Cool
Black Sabbath - 13 (their latest album - 2-channel only, but nice sound quality)
Not Blu-ray Audio, but still higher-rez/5.1 mixes/nicely mastered/remastered...DVD-A/DVD-V or DTS discs...
Emerson Lake Palmer - S/T (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
Emerson Lake Palmer - Tarkus (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
King Crimson - Red (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
King Crimson - Starless (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
King Crimson - Discipline (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
King Crimson - Lizard (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
King Crimson - Larks Tongues In Aspic (Steven Wilson remaster - 5.1 mix)
Anything from Porcupine Tree
Any of the Opeth releases with CD+DVD-Audio discs like Blackwater Park or Heritage (most are Steven Wilson mastering)
Eagles - Hell Freezes Over DTS
Steve Miller Band - Fly Like An Eagle DTS
Any of the Donald Fagen DVD-Audio discs (Nightfly, Morph The Cat, Kamakiriad)
Steely Dan - Two Against Nature
Steely Dan - Gaucho
Pat Metheny - Imaginary Day
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Southern Surroundings (a Walmart exclusive still available - around $12 and includes a great DVD-A disc - incredibly good sound of most of their biggest hits and in 5.1 to boot - by far, the best $12 I spent a couple years ago when it was released)
...so if you didn't already figure it out, anything that Steven Wilson has touched is worth the price of admission IMHO - he is one of the best, if not the best, with remastering older material and producing 5.1 mixes. He's got a new album coming out in February - Hand.Cannot.Erase. - in Blu-ray Audio, so look for that one.
Most of the HFPA Blu-ray Audio discs I have have very poor menus/track info/navigation, but many have pretty good sound. And most are 2-channel only.
If I were to recommend a few to start with, I'd go with The Raven That Refused To Sing, Reckless, Modern Cool, and The Power And The Glory BR-Audio discs, and Gaucho, Hell Freezes Over, Southern Surroundings, Red, and Imaginary Day DVD-A/DTS discs. You'll be lovin' your system even more after listening to any of these!
...and don't forget SACDs - there are some great ones as well.
